McNamara salutes Bulls' bravery
Saturday 6th March 10
Bradford Bulls coach Steve McNamara praised his side for their character in overturning a 20-0 deficit to hand Wigan Warriors their first defeat of 2010 - but pleaded with them not to make a habit of it.
The Bulls looked down and out after conceding tries to Darrell Goulding, Sam Tomkins, Harrison Hansen and Pat Richards in a one-sided first half at the Grattan Stadium.
But Australian scrum-half Matt Orford masterminded a remarkable fightback that brought about a 22-20 triumph, bringing back memories of Wigan's famous 31-30 play-off victory at Odsal in 2007 after they had trailed 30-6.
"It was a great comeback, as good as any team-bonding exercise, but we can't rely on doing that every week," said McNamara.
Orford shrugged off illness to score two tries and set up another for half-back partner Brett Kearney before a last-minute try from Orford's former Manly Sea Eagles team-mate Glenn Hall - his first for the club - clinched a third successive victory for the resurgent Bulls.
Wigan stay top but only on points difference from Hull FC, who turned on the style in the second half to beat Castleford Tigers 42-22 at the KC Stadium.
It was 12-12 at the break but four tries in the space of 11 minutes from Richard Horne (two), Peter Cusack and Craig Hall set Hull on their way to a fourth win from five attempts.
Castleford, who lost loose forward Joe Westerman with a knee injury before kick-off, have now suffered four straight defeats since their opening-night win at Leeds, although there was another try for winger Shaun Ainscough, his fourth in two games since signing on loan from Wigan.
Champions Leeds Rhinos are third after recovering from their bruising World Club Challenge defeat with a thumping 62-4 rout of a depleted Harlequins RL at Headingley.
The Rhinos led 14-4 at the interval through tries from Brent Webb (two) and Ryan Hall - the first of the season for last year's leading scorer - and ran in nine more, including one for debutant winger Tom Bush, in a rampant second-half display.
Catalans Dragons bounced back from their 58-0 humiliation by Wigan by gaining their first win of the season at the expense of Salford City Reds, who take their place at the foot of the table after a fifth straight defeat.
Centre Chris Walker scored two tries as the French side came from 12-8 down at half-time to win 24-12 at The Willows and ease the pressure on coach Kevin Walters.
"They say a week is a long time in football but our guys were pumping to get over that embarrassment (at Wigan)," said Walters.
"We weren't great but this was more like a Dragons team. We reacted well after the Wigan defeat.
"There is always pressure in this job but this win eases the pressure on all of us."
