Colbon shines in Rovers win
Monday 8th March 10
Winger Liam Colbon marked his return to the Hull KR side with a hat-trick of tries as Rovers inflicted a second Engage Super League defeat on St Helens.
Saints came from 16-4 down to lead 24-22 with two minutes to go but were unable to defend six repeat sets near their own line and Rovers hooker Ben Fisher went over for the all-important try that secured a 28-24 victory.
St Helens coach Mick Potter said: “They had 40-odd tackles on our line. I don’t think many teams can hold out for that length of time.”
Saints scored tries through Chris Dean, Scott Moore, Gary Wheeler, Francis Meli and Kyle Eastmond, who also kicked two goals, but injuries continue to mount.
Already without six regulars, Potter’s men suffered another major blow when full-back Paul Wellens went off with a dead leg midway through the first half, and they also lost winger Jonny Lomax with a broken nose.
Second-rower Ben Galea was a try-scorer on his first appearance of the season for Rovers as they made an impressive start before falling away.
“I thought we were our worst enemies at times,” said Rovers coach Justin Morgan. “For the first 25 minutes we played nice and tight and thoroughly deserved our lead.
“But then we got a little loose defensively and gave away the ball and a couple of penalties to let Saints back in the game.
“We rallied really hard in that last 10 minutes, just kept going at them and it was a nice little play by Ben Fisher to get the winner.”
Warrington Wolves boss Tony Smith saluted Australian centre Matt King after his outstanding performance helped to destroy Crusaders RL.
King followed up his outstanding display at Huddersfield Giants last week by scoring twice and setting up two more tries, with England forward Ben Westwood also crossing twice in the 46-12 win.
Smith said: “Matt was terrific both offensively and defensively. He bombed three or four chances and was still sensational. That shows how good he is.
“He’s in rampaging form but has been playing strong all year. He caused problems wherever he popped up and a few opponents will be going home with Matt King headaches.”
Warrington’s victory lifted them into second place, level on points with leaders Wigan Warriors, while Huddersfield Giants are fourth following their 52-0 rout of Wakefield Wildcats on Saturday.
