Wildcats turn to young duo

Wednesday 10th March 10

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach John Kear has responded to his side’s 52-0 thrashing by Huddersfield Giants by calling up two youngsters for Friday’s trip to Hull Kingston Rovers.

Ben Gledhill, the 20-year-old prop who only yesterday signed a full-time contract, and 17-year-old goal-kicking stand-off Cain Southernwood are in line to make their senior debuts.

“This demonstrates the strength of having a good squad,” said Kear. “When we have injury problems we have enough quality young players who are looking for the opportunity to show us what they can do at Super League level.

“Both Ben and Cain have earned the right to have a place in the squad by what they’ve achieved in training and with the reserve team.”

A leg injury picked up by stand-off Ben Jeffries in the 10-try mauling by the Giants has opened up a spot for Southernwood.

Rovers have an injury doubt over Chaz I’Anson, who has ousted Paul Cooke from the stand-off role, and coach Justin Morgan has called Frankie Mariano into his squad for the first time.
