Salford swoop for Patten
Tuesday 27th July 10
Salford City Reds have signed highly-rated Canterbury Bulldogs full-back Luke Patten on a three-year deal starting next season.
Patten's signing is the latest boost after key performers Daniel Holdsworth, Ashley Gibson and Adam Sidlow committed to new contracts.
Salford chairman John Wilkinson said: "It is undoubtedly great news for Salford to announce the signing of Luke Patten from the Bulldogs.
"Luke has been one of the finest full-backs in the world for many years and it is a signal of our intent for the future.
"As part of our plan as we move to our new home in 2012, it is our intention to strengthen the team and compete in what will be an historical year for our club."
Patten, who joined Canterbury in 2001, has twice been the club's player of the year.
The 30-year-old has played 220 first-grade games for the Bulldogs and remains a consistent performer after recovering from a serious back injury two years ago.
"Luke has been one of this club's great leaders and we are sorry to see him go," said Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg.
Salford now hope to add further to their squad for what they expect will be their last year at The Willows before leaving for a new site at Barton.
Wilkinson added: "We are continuing to look at bringing further exceptional talent to The Willows for the final season, so as to leave lasting memories with the fans of a tremendous old stadium."
