King, Wood and Anderson set to return
Tuesday 27th July 10
Warrington Wolves trio Matt King, Paul Wood and Louis Anderson could return for Saturday’s derby clash against St Helens.
All three were left out of second-placed Warrington’s Engage Super League loss to Catalans Dragons in Perpignan last weekend.
Centre King was rested for the trip while Wood and Anderson were out injured.
Coach Tony Smith said: “We have a few bumps and bruises, nothing out of the ordinary. We are not too far off having most of our troops back this weekend.
“We’ll assess them as the week goes on but most players have been able to train pretty well.”
Smith believes not playing King was the right decision even though, a week after beating league leaders Wigan Warriors, Warrington lost 29-28 to the bottom side.
Smith said: “I am pretty sure Kingy will come through this week.
“We run tests on all our players and monitor their fatigue levels.
“We try to prevent injury rather than cause it. We take care of them and the signs were there for some of our players that injury wouldn’t be far from them. We kept them out of the front line.”
Wood is particularly keen to return this weekend as the Wolves finally seek to lay their St Helens bogey to rest at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Warrington - who have a two-point advantage over Saints - have won just one of their last 42 games against the Merseysiders, and that came in 2001. Wood, who played in that last victory at Warrington’s old Wilderspool ground, said: “I got a small tear in my quad and so I missed the game against Catalans.
“I was just advised to rest and then it’d take 10-12 days to fully heal.
“Hopefully I’ll be fit for Saints. It’s going to be a massive game with a good atmosphere at a packed-out stadium.”
