24th August 2011
The RFL is delighted to announce that Air Marshal Sir Stuart Peach will be Guest of Honour on Saturday at the 2011 Carnegie Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium, Leeds Rhinos versus Wigan Warriors.
Sir Stuart, who is the Chief of Joint Operations for the British Armed Forces, is a great supporter of Rugby League and is currently the President of Tri-Service and the Royal Air Force Rugby League.
Sir Stuart was commissioned into the Royal Air Force in 1977 and flew in a photographic reconnaissance role prior to three successive tours in the UK and Germany, qualifying as a weapons and electronic warfare instructor.
He was Commander of British Forces (Italy) 1999-2000 and NATO Air Commander (Forward) in Kosovo in 2000 before serving as Commandant UK Air Warfare Centre and Assistant Chief of Staff (Intelligence) Strike Command from 2000 to 2003. He assumed his current appointment as Chief of Joint Operations at PJHQ (UK) in March 2009.
"Sir Stuart Peach has been a great friend to the sport of Rugby League and we're delighted that he has been able to accept our invitation to be our Guest of Honour and present the Carnegie Challenge Cup,” said RFL Chairman Richard Lewis.
"He has reached the upper echelons of the UK military and has proved to be an inspirational figure throughout his career. He is a strong advocate of the sport and regularly watches Rugby League at all levels including his unrivalled support for the RAF Rugby League team.”
Air Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, said:
"It is a great honour for me to be invited - on behalf of the UK Armed Forces - to present the Carnegie Challenge Cup. We, in military sport in general and Rugby League in particular, are proud and pleased of our links between Rugby League in the Services and the RFL – enabled by the outstanding support from Richard Lewis.
“As the UK Joint Commander I am very grateful to all involved with Rugby League for the support you have given to Service charities through Tickets for Troops and other worthy causes."
Meanwhile, a number of troops from the Armed Forces have been invited to Wembley on Saturday to enjoy the final from the Club Wembley facilities.
Through the partnership with the Tickets for Troops initiative, the RFL are pleased to be able to offer a number of tickets to this worthwhile cause, which recently celebrated a significant milestone of 100,000 registered members, via the Armed Forces.
This remarkable achievement has taken less than two years and shows that the charity has really captured the heart of the nation as well as all those serving personnel.
