Wood continues studies Super League

A ruptured testicle could not force Warrington Wolves forward Paul Wood from the field during last Saturday’s Grand Final and it was not enough to prevent him returning to university today.

Less than four days after having his right testicle removed as a result of his horrific injury, Wood was back in class and on time to resume his studies for an MSc in strength and conditioning at the University of Bolton.

“I wanted to attend today because I’m really enjoying the course and working towards my future,” said Wood.

“I’m 31 today, thinking about the future and that’s why I’m looking to educate myself.

“I want to stay on in the sport after I’ve finished playing, in a coaching or fitness capacity.

“Plus it is also helping my career and working environment now as I’m learning more about the body and also I feel okay now.”

Wood sustained the injury in the first minute of the second half of the game at Old Trafford but played on and only discovered the extent of the damage after being sent for scans later that evening.

“It was purely accidental,” he said. “I was just running with ball and collided with a Leeds player and his knee just caught me. It hurt a bit so the physio came on and asked did I want to come off.

“I said ‘no’ and tried to run it off but, unfortunately, I had to come off about 20 minutes later.”

Wood had the testicle removed straight away but managed to put on a brave face, revealing the news on Twitter from his hospital bed, and admitted the pain was nothing compared to the anguish of losing to Leeds Rhinos.

The father of two added: “I was gutted to lose the final. The entire team worked so hard all year and it is what you train for.

“But Leeds proved just a bit too good for us in the end and we lost to the better team on the day.

“That was probably more painful than the injury, watching Leeds lift the trophy. But I hung around to show support to my team and applaud the winners.”
