Challenge Cup round-up Super League

BLACKBROOK produced an upset as they sent Hattons Solicitors National Conference League side CASTLEFORD LOCK LANE spinning out of the Challenge Cup with a 22-6 victory.

The visiting West Yorkshire side never recovered from trailing 16-0 at half-time as Jon Marsh (2) and Stephen Parkinson touched down and Lee Marsh kicked two conversions.

Scott Horner grabbed Lock Lane’s only try which was converted by Danny Rowse, however the St Helens-based hosts sealed their win when Glover crossed for his hat-trick score and Parkinson improved the effort.

A last minute try from Joey Walkin – goaled by Tom Sheldrake – helped EAST LEEDS edge past DRIGHLINGTON 18-16.

The NCL Division Two Champions had been 16-6 down with 10 minutes left before hitting back with tries to Adam Hartley and Walkin.

Winger Rob Brown had earlier raced over for the hosts opening try, Sheldrake improving, before Pennine League outfit Drig stormed back to lead thanks to tries from Gary Smith and Tom Moorby plus four goals from Michael Sanderson.

BRISTOL SONICS produced a superb team effort before going down 36-24 to ECCLES.

The Sonics actually led 12-10 after the first quarter, but were eventually overhauled by their more experienced Manchester visitors.

Eccles points came from tries to Ben Williamson (2), Mike O’Boyle, Mark Thomas, Adam Taher, Christian Higgins and Richard Openshaw, whilst Andrew Muscat tagged on four goals.

For Bristol Marcus Brooker and James Raymond stood out with a brace each and Dom Swann kicked both conversions and a couple of penalties.

OVENDEN squeezed past DEWSBURY CELTIC 19-16 in a hard fought cup tie.

The Halifax side had tries by Pete Williams, Matthew Dawson and Luke Sutcliffe, with Niall Brady slotting over three goals and a field-goal.

Celtic did manage three tries of their own as Josh Thorneycroft, Danny Crabtree and Adam Egan touched down, with Niki Crabtree adding two conversions.

PILKINGTON RECS returned from West Yorkshire with a win after seeing off SHAW CROSS SHARKS 38-10.

Tries from John Pennington and Jono Peters gave the St Helens side a great start before Danny Smith replied for the Sharks.

Danny Lynch kicked three of his eventual five goals when he improved Ryan Liptrot’s late effort which made it 18-6 at the break, before Chris Smith (2), Lynch and John Rees all went over in the second half to underline their side’s dominance.

Smith managed a second for the hosts but it was nothing but a consolation.

WIDNES WEST BANK raced to a comfortable 40-4 win over STANNINGLEY.

Widnes were 24-0 to the good by the interval after tries to Ryan Bates (2), Ryan Millington and Jack White all touched down and David Jones added a conversion to each.

The points continued to flow in the second half as Millington, Jones and Josh Simm all crossed the line, although the hosts did claim some reward when Tom Kent crossed for their only points.

HUNSLET WARRIORS came out on top in an entertaining clash with WIGAN ST JUDES.

St Judes were well adrift before they mounted a comeback which saw them register tries to Nathan Jones and Tom Whittle, plus the last two of John Derbyshire’s three goals.

Hunslet had earlier opened up an emphatic lead as Matty Scott (2), Johnny Dawson, Jake Corney and Micky Lyons went over and Mark Holmes (2) and Gary McClelland added the extras.

ELLAND went down 34-10 to LEEDS MET UNIVERSITY despite tries to Junaid Malik and Jorge Fairbank, plus a conversion from Phil Taylor.

The students had too much firepower for the Halifax outfit and registered six tries in total as Jamie Love, Mufaro Mvududu, Chris Bowler, Owen Griffiths, Alistair Leak and Jonathan Dawes.

Gareth Hynes and Nathan Fozzard added the conversions on a good afternoon for the students.

FEATHERSTONE LIONS came out on top 28-14 in their West Yorkshire derby with STANLEY RANGERS.

Stanley got off to a perfect start as Danny Grice converted Scott Childs early touchdown, before the Lions responded with a Sam Candlin double to move into a 12-6 half-time lead.

That lead was increased when Jack Nicholson went over 12 minutes after the re-start, before Jamie Gollings hit back to make for an interesting final quarter.

A double-strike from Sam Wilson and Adam Hepworth gave Featherstone some breathing space and Rich Frankland added his fourth goal to make the game safe, before Grice went over for a late consolation effort.

MILLOM claimed the Cumbria bragging rights with a 28-14 victory at ASKAM.

The home side looked good as they led 14-12 thanks to tries to Tom Holmes (2) and Ben Lewney, plus a Kristian Tyson conversion.

However, Millom finished the stronger to book their place in the next round with a five-try show.

Anthony Murray, Jamie Sandham and Marcus O’Brien all went over in the second-half to add to earlier efforts from Sandham and Ricky Donaghue.

Ross Brookes was on target with four goals as the Woollybacks progressed.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY gave a good account of themselves on Sunday before eventually losing out 32-22 at EASTMOOR DRAGONS.

Nick Collins played a staring from for the students with a hat-trick of tries whilst Rory Campbell also touched down.

First half efforts from Caine McVittee, Greg Wilby and Darren Fisher – plus an Adrian Mulcahy conversion – meant the Dragons led 16-14 at the interval and they added more points as McVittee and Wilby went over again for Mulcahy improved efforts before Adam Fleming touched down late on to seal the win.

The BRITISH POLICE won 18-4 at WARRINGTON WIZARDS thanks to tries from Gary Johnson, Jamie Dixon and Alex Daniels, whilst the boot of Adam Newton contributed three goals.

The Wizards only points came via a first-half effort from Christian Taylor.

After opening up a 16-0 half-time lead UNDERBANK RANGERS progressed through to the next round with a comprehensive 32-6 win over HEWORTH.

Will Midgley went over twice for a Rangers side which also added touchdowns to Alex Chatterton, Sam Hendrick, Richard Aka and Sam Dalby as Neil Barrett kicked four goals.

Gary Wilkinson improved Michael Brown’s effort for Heworth’s sole response.
