Challenge Cup round-up Super League

NORMANTON KNIGHTS stunned YORK ACORN with a 48-16 success in the delayed first qualifying round.

The Knights – who play their trade in the National Conference League Division Two – cruised past Division One Acorn with a great attacking display.

Daryl North converted efforts from Callum Hannigan and Joe Budd to put the York side 12-8 ahead just after the half-hour mark, however by the interval the Normanton were 16-12 to the good thanks to touchdowns from Steve Parkinson, Jonny Hodgson, Scott Parsons and Paul Greaves.

They continued to dominate proceedings in the second half as Hodgson completed his hat-trick and scrum-half Johnny Kirk also raced over.

Their afternoon’s work was completed by a late brace for Tom Alexander as Ben Pepe closed with six goals.

Hannigan grabbed a consolation for Acorn with his second.

MILFORD MARLINS were given a huge scare by NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY before edging through 20-16 after extra-time.

The NCL outfit trailed 16-12 going into the final quarter before winger Sam Hood raced over with 18 minutes left to level matters and force extra-time.

The Marlins then dominated the extra-time period and finally sealed the win when Henry Mingham collected a kick through to cross for the winning try.

Hood and Martin Loveridge had earlier crossed for Milford as James Coates improved both efforts.

PILKINGTON RECS come out on top against FEATHERSTONE LIONS with a 32-12 win.

The St Helens side had opening quarter tries from Kevin Duffy and Mark Ashton converted by Danny Lynch, before loose-forward James Parry replied for the Lions as Richard Frankland added the extras.

Ashton and Jamie Smith both touched down either side of the break to keep Pilkington in control, although Frankland was on target again when he improved Danny Graham’s effort.

It was never going to be enough though as Pilks closed strongly and adding final tries from Ryan Rogers and Chris Smith, Lynch completing a four-goal tally.

EAST LEEDS came out on top 26-18 in their derby encounter with HUNSLET WARRIORS.

The hosts were forced to withstand a Warriors fight back from 14-0 down before booking their place in the next round.

Tries to Luke Tomlinson, Jake Normington and Lee Fisher – plus a goal from Tom Sheldrake – put the home side in control before Hunslet mounted their comeback.

Caldon Bravo and Connor Spence had their tries improved by Gary McClelland as the gap was cut to just two points, before Tomlinson grabbed a second that Jason Preistley improved.

With the game drawing to a close McClelland converted a second from Bravo, however it was not to be as a late Joey Walkin effort and Sheldrake goal completed the scoring.

BRADFORD DUDLEY HILL completed an emphatic 68-12 win over EASTMOOR DRAGONS.

Nathan Kitson led the way with a five-try haul for his side as they powered to a huge 50-6 half-time lead.

Adrian Mulcahy converted Greg Wilby’s effort for the visitor’s first half points and he improved his own try in the second period to complete the Dragons points haul.

However, Neil Wall crossed for a hat-trick and James Steward and Dave Halley – who also kicked seven goals – also helped rack up the points.

Jason Lee helped himself to a try and a goal whilst hooker Anthony Huby also crossed the whitewash.

BLACKBROOK overturned a 10-6 half-time deficit to claim a 36-10 win over the BRITISH POLICE.

Ryan Healey and Alex Clemie both touched down with Adam Newton adding a conversion, but an effort from man-of-the-match Neil Babbs – converted by Lee Marsh – kept the visitors in the hunt.

The St Helens side took control in the second half they crossed for four answered tries via John Glover, Sean Richardson, Steve Parkinson and Marsh who also completed a six-goal performance.

LEEDS METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY marched into the next round after disposing of UNDERBANK RANGERS 22-6.

Gary Fairhead broke the deadlock when he touched down in the 20th minute for a try Gareth Hynes improved, but that lead didn’t last long as Neil Barrett converted Alex Chatterton’s try just seven minutes later.

Liam Thompson forced his way over to help the students into a 12-6 half-time lead before Scott Elland claimed the only try of the second period in the 68th minute to make the game safe.

Hynes finishing the afternoon with five goals to his name.
