Hull FC will celebrate their passion and heritage at Magic Weekend on Saturday when they play rivals Hull KR in a special edition shirt etched with the names of supporters and past players.
In what is believed to be a first for Super League, it will see the Black and Whites take to the field at the Etihad Stadium in a traditional hooped kit bearing the names of club legends and fans who pre-ordered the unique design back in February.
With hundreds of the Old Faithful signing up and securing their place in the illustrious history of the club, they will now line up alongside all-time legends such as Great Britain international and fans’ favourite Johnny Whiteley on the shirt for Hull’s fixture at the Rugby League extravaganza.
The ex-Ashes winning coach was given the honour of being the first name included in the shirt with a series of polls on www.hullfc.com then deciding the remaining spots in a battle of former players from across the decades.
After a closely fought contest, it saw the immortal Clive Sullivan, Richard Swain, Peter Sterling, Steve Norton and current half-back Richard Horne come out on top, with the latter set to wear the shirt himself at the Magic Weekend when Peter Gentle’s side look to secure the bragging rights over their fierce cross-city rivals.
And speaking ahead of the clash, the in-form Horne said: “I’m very proud and humbled to be voted onto the shirt by the fans and it will mean a lot to look down on Saturday and see myself alongside some truly great players of the club.
“The fact that it is a derby makes it all the more special as we know just how much these games mean to the fans. The bragging rights are at stake and the importance of the game is not lost on the players.
“We are happy with how we have been playing recently but form counts for nothing in a derby. We have to make sure we prepare well this week and put in another good performance.”
