Super League’s most celebrated Londoner Tony Clubb is aiming to crown a momentous year in his career by leading his home-town club all the way to Wembley and the 2013 Tetley’s Challenge Cup final.

Clubb, who became the first ‘local’ to captain London Broncos earlier this season, has set his sights on playing at the national stadium on Saturday August 24 but with 160 minutes of rugby separating him from a lifetime ambition the 25-year-old is taking nothing for granted.

Before then the Broncos face a potentially traumatic trip to the Don Valley Stadium on Friday night (8.00) when Clubb and his team-mates take on Kingstone Press Championship leaders Sheffield Eagles in an intriguing quarter-final.

And with Sheffield, the Championship champions and 2013 Northern Rail Cup finalists in imperious form, Clubb knows it is going to be tough in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

“We’ve watched a fair bit of video on them and they’re flying high in the Championship,” said Clubb. “We’re not underestimating them, we won’t be going there thinking we’ve already won, but we will be going there full of confidence to get the win and go on to the next stage of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup.”

Clubb made his first team debut for Harlequins RL against Bradford in 2006 as an 18-year-old centre and in 2010 scored four tries for England against Papua New Guinea. He switched to the pack last year and following the departure of Craig Gower in mid-season, was made captain of the Broncos.

The year after Sheffield’s shock win over Wigan in the 1998 Challenge Cup final, the Broncos made their one and only visit to Wembley where they were beaten by Leeds Rhinos in the last final to be played at the old stadium.

It has been a difficult year for the Broncos, who currently lie bottom of Super League, but reaching the final would be a huge boost for the club.

And for a local boy to lead the team out at Wembley would be something special. “I think this is the furthest I’ve been in the competition,” said Clubb. “To lead the team out at Wembley would be awesome, but we can’t look past Sheffield, that’s a massive game for us.”

Tickets for the Tetley’s Challenge Cup quarter-final, Sheffield Eagles v London Broncos at Don Valley Stadium on Friday July 12 cost from £11 adults, £8 for senior citizens and £3 for students and under-16s and can be purchased by calling the Sheffield Eagles Ticket Office on 0114 261 0326
