Wigan Warriors winger Josh Charnley can’t wait to make his second appearance in a Cup final at Wembley when Wigan take on Hull FC in the 2013 Tetley’s Challenge Cup final on Saturday August 24 (3.00pm).
Charnley lifted the trophy with the Warriors when they beat Leeds Rhinos in the 2011 showpiece event and the flying winger, who currently tops the Super League try-scoring charts, is hoping to make it two from two at Wembley.
“Getting to the Challenge Cup final and getting to Wembley has been a focus of ours throughout the season and it’s great that we have got there,” said Charnley.
“It’s a massive occasion for everyone involved at the club from the players through to the fans and the staff.
“Getting to Wembley in 2011 and being on the winning side is up there with the best experiences I have ever had. The week building up to the final is great, there’s a buzz in camp during preparation and the media interest goes up as well so we’re all really looking forward to it.”
Wigan secured their place in the final following a comprehensive win over London Broncos and they’ll face a Hull FC side full of confidence after dumping 2012 Cup winners Warrington Wolves out of the competition in the semi-final stage and Charnley knows they can’t take the opposition lightly.
“We’ve worked hard as a squad all year,” said Charnley. “We had a bit of a blip a few weeks ago but we’ve come through that and bounced back from it.
“We’ve shown that we can turn it around so it would be great to push on from that now and put in a big performance at Wembley. We know we have to stay focused because we can’t afford to be off in our game on the day and we have to go out there and give it everything we have.
“Playing in the Cup final is a massive opportunity for everyone in the squad. Some of our players might never get the chance to play at Wembley again so it’s a huge thing for everyone to be involved and hopefully we’ll make it a day to remember.”
