Knockout experience key for Smith

Matty Smith believes that Wigan Warriors’ unbeaten record in knockout Rugby League this season will be a key factor when the Tetley’s Challenge Cup winners take on League Leaders’ Shield holders Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday (8.00pm).

In the first of the 2013 Super League play-off matches, half-back Smith, who was also named in the 2013 Super League Dream Team earlier this week, believes that the ability to perform in the big games will be crucial to overcoming a strong Huddersfield side.

I think most people have written us off again, so I suppose there’s no pressure on us, but we’re going to have to perform really well to beat these teams and win the competition,” said Smith.

We’re the only side to not lose a knockout game this season. We’ve proved that we can play in the big games and it’s going to be another massive game here on Thursday.

You’ve got to beat the best to win, and they don’t come better than Huddersfield this year and they’re going to take some beating.

“But we’ve got the belief in our players to do it and we’ve worked really hard this year so we’re hoping we can kick on now and do well in the play-offs.”
