Former Sheffield Eagles star Keith Senior is to return to the club, joining the first team backroom staff.

The move will see Senior become assistant coach to Head Coach Mark Aston, alongside current assistant coach Dave Larder.

The role will see him involved during the week in training sessions and on game days whilst maintaining his day-to-day role at the Leeds Rugby Foundation.

Aston and Senior played together at the Eagles from 1995-1999 and both starred in the clubs famous Challenge Cup Final win over Wigan at Wembley in 1998.

Senior, 37 retired from playing in 2011 after an illustrious domestic career with the Eagles and Leeds Rhinos along with international honours with Great Britain and England.

Back in 2009 he was the first player to reach 500 appearances in the Super League, scoring 226 tries and was named in the Super League Dream Team five times.

He appeared in the 2004 Grand Final and 2005 World Club Challenge wins for Leeds along with the Rhinos three successive Grand Final wins over St. Helens in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Speaking of the move, Senior said, “It’s great to be heading back to the Eagles. I have a lot of fond memories at the club and I’m excited about getting involved.

“I’ve been interested in coaching for some time now and see it as the next natural progression after finishing my playing career.

“Mark (Aston) has got a really good, dedicated squad of players and I hope I can play my part and help the club retain the Championship for a third successive year. I can’t wait to get started.”

Mark Aston added, “I’m thrilled Keith is coming back to us. He has a lot of knowledge around the game and has some an abundance of experience on the big stage with numerous Challenge Cup and Grand Final appearances under his belt along with a raft of international appearances.

“We made history this year becoming the first team to become back-to-back Champions and we are aiming to win it again in 2014.”

“Dave Larder has been superb as assistant coach and we’ve got a really wealth of knowledge and experience in our backroom staff for 2014 which Keith will certainly add too.”
