St Helens have given new, long-term contracts to two of their most promising players.

Forward Alex Walmsley, 23, who created a big impression in his maiden First Utility Super League season in 2013 after moving from Batley on a three-year contract, has signed a three-year extension which takes him to the end of 2017, while winger Adam Swift, 19, has extended his stay at Langtree Park to the end of the same season.

Saints coach Nathan Brown said: "Adam is a good young kid who took his chance last season. He is quick and eager to learn and I'm sure if he continues to develop will have a very good future in the game.

"Alex surprised everyone with how well he coped with the rigours of Super League but he thoroughly deserved the accolades that came his way.

"He adds a lot of size to our pack and like Adam will continue to develop and have a bright future."

The 6ft 5in Walmsley was playing amateur rugby league just three years ago but made 26 appearances out of a possible 30 for St Helens last season and is seen as a potential international.

"I'm delighted the club has rewarded me with a new contract and I would like to thank both (chairman) Eamonn McManus and (chief executive) Mike Rush for showing faith in me," Walmsley said.

"I had a good season last year and now I am looking forward to getting stuck in and showing the fans the improvements I have made in pre-season."

Swift, who joined Saints from local amateurs Blackbrook, scored a hat-trick of tries on his Super League debut against Widnes Vikings in 2012 and made a big impact towards the end of last year, scoring eight tries in his club's last eight matches of the campaign.

"I'm over the moon to sign a new contract at Saints," Swift said. "It's a club I have always wanted to play for and I have enjoyed my time here so far.

"I know I have been given the number five shirt but that isn't a guarantee of a spot especially with the quality of the players we have here. I know I have to continue to work hard and keep learning."
