Lawler joins Tigers for 2022

Castleford Tigers have announced that George Lawler has signed a two-year deal with the club from the 2022 season.

The 26-year-old has spent his entire career at boyhood club Hull KR since scoring on debut against Widnes Viking back in 2015, and in 2021 has been the Robins’ longest-serving player within their squad.

Lawler played a big part in the East Hull club reclaiming their Super League status with promotion in 2017 and has been a crucial cog in the team that secured a play-off position this term.

Hailed for his fantastic work rate in the middle of the field, Lawler is also comfortable playing in any position within the forward pack.

On signing for the Tigers, a delighted Lawler told castlefordtigers.com how much he is looking forward to being a part of the Club’s new era under Lee Radford.

“I’m really excited, I’ve been at Hull KR for six/seven years and loved my time, and to now come to Castleford I’m really looking forward to it, linking up with Radders (Lee Radford) and I think the signings that we’ve made are exciting.

“I’ve spoke to a couple of boys who’ve worked under Lee, there has been nothing but positive things. The sort of style of play he played suits me too, so I’m looking forward to working with him.??

The Mend-A-Hose Jungle is Lawler’s new home ground from 2022, a stadium George himself has loved visiting as an opposition player.

“It’s pretty hostile! To have the fans on your side will be special I’m sure, I can’t wait to get out there for my first game and play in front of the Cas fans. It’s a great stadium because the fans are always on your back when you’re playing there, so it’ll be nice to have them on my side.??

Tony Smith’s Hull KR side have been one of the stories of the 2021 season after finishing 11th in 2020, they made it just one win away from reaching the Grand Final at Old Trafford. It’s been a campaign to remember for Lawler.

“I think this year has been the best year that I’ve been at KR, rugby-wise, but I’m looking forward to a new challenge with Cas and I’m sure we can do good things as well.??

Lawler is one of six new faces to step into the Castleford 2022 squad, and he is eager to get to work with his new Tiger teammates and play in front of the Fords faithful at Wheldon Road.

“The style that Kenny Edwards and Alex Sutcliffe play, I think it’s going to be nice to join up with them, as well as the rest of the boys, and see how they all play and then bring my bit to the team as well.

“I think I bring a lot of work rate; I do the little things that nobody really sees to help the team out. It helps lay the platform for the backs and halves.

“I can’t wait to play in front of the Cas fans, wear the jersey with pride and passion, and do my bit for them.??

Castleford Tigers Head Coach Lee Radford put forward that Lawler will bring a hardworking attitude to his pack for the next campaign.

“You look at the honesty and hard work you get from the players here at Castleford Tigers, players like Nathan Massey and what he brings to the table, George is exactly the same.

“Hopefully now you can see the theme of what we want the team to look like with these type of players in there. I can’t wait to work with George.??
