The Giants to go Supersonic this Friday

24th June 2013

The Huddersfield Giants and the John Smith’s Stadium will play host to the BLOODHOUND SUPERSONIC CAR (SSC) before their top of the table clash against the Catalan Dragons on Friday 28th June (8pm kick off).

The Bloodhound SSC, which is currently under development by some of the world’s leading engineers, is looking to achieve the goal of reaching a land speed record of 1,000 mph (just over 1,600kph) with supporters able to view the car with a valid match ticket prior to the game.

The amazing machine is a jet and rocket powered car designed to travel faster than the speed of sound, covering a mile in 3.6 seconds or four and a half football pitches in 1 second. It has a 13m long slender body length with two front wheels within the bodywork and two rear wheels mounted externally within wheel fairings. It weighs over 7.5 tonnes and the three engines produce the equivalent to 135,000 horsepower - more than 6 times the power of all the Formula 1 cars on a starting grid put together!

The unique vehicle is a mix of a race car and aerospace technology, with the front half being a carbon fibre monocoque like an F1 car and the back half being a metallic framework with panels like an aircraft. Speed, however is not the main focus of the Project, rather it is to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by showcasing world class technology and engineering in the most exciting  way possible.

With support from Cummins Turbo Technologies, the University of Huddersfield and Aireshelta, the car will be located in the Town Avenue Car Park in its Aireshelta base from 5pm through to kick off on the night of the game.

Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis commented:

“We are delighted to welcome the Bloodhound SSC for our game against Catalan Dragons. It truly is a world class machine with cutting edge technology and it is a great honour to welcome it to the home of the Huddersfield Giants. The visit has been made possible by support from Cummins Turbo Technologies, the University of Huddersfield and Aireshelta and we are very grateful to them for this. I encourage all supporters to make sure they get down to stadium early to enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity to see world class technology and world class Rugby League action all on the same evening.

Enthusiasts can see the Bloodhound SSC at the John Smith’s Stadium close up from 5pm with a valid match ticket for the evenings Huddersfield Giants versus Catalan Dragons game, kick off 8.00pm. Tickets for the game are available from just £5 (Fantastic Media Stand ) and all under 12's are free.
