Huddersfield-born Michael Lawrence is expecting a tough Tetley’s Challenge Cup test when St Helens come to town on Sunday (2.15pm) in the fourth round of Rugby League’s oldest and most prestigious competition.
Being born and brought up in Huddersfield gives Lawrence an added sense of pride when representing his home-town club, and the centre-turned-loose forward knows exactly what a successful Cup run means to the Kirklees area ahead of the Giants’ clash against the Super League leaders.
“I feel really proud to represent Huddersfield, I know lots of people in the town and I know what Rugby League means to people here,” said Lawrence, a former Newsome Panthers player.
“To pull on that shirt for Huddersfield knowing what it means to the area gives me that bit of extra pride. The club is part of a great history of Rugby League.
“St Helens have started the year on fire and it should be a really good game. It is probably the best tie of the round and it is going to be a tough game but you have got to play all the big teams if you want to get to Wembley.
“It will definitely be a good marker of where we are at when we play Saints. We have not managed to finish some games off this year but we just want to go as far as we can in this competition.”
Lawrence had only just joined Huddersfield’s youth set-up when the Giants faced St Helens in the 2006 Challenge Cup final, which that year was played at Twickenham.
He remembers watching the game on television, though has much fonder memories of being part of the 2009 Giants squad which travelled to Wembley – something which Lawrence wants his club to emulate this year.
“I remember watching the game on telly in 2006 but I was 18th man in 2009,” he said. “I was only 19 at the time and there were a mix of emotions for me.
“There were 80,000 people there and to soak up the atmosphere and to get to warm up in front of that many people was a great experience.”
