Briscoe aims to hit Saints ‘flying’

24th April 2014

Tom Briscoe wants Leeds Rhinos to head into their Tetley’s Challenge Cup fifth round tie against St Helens ‘flying’ as they look to reach the quarter-finals of Rugby League’s oldest and most prestigious competition at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Saturday (2.30pm).

Table-topping Rhinos take on Saints in a repeat of the thrilling Super League fixture which the latter won at Langtree Park in March, and whilst Briscoe is aware of the threat that St Helens pose, he wants to make the most of a strong Cup run.

“Obviously we are the top two in Super League and it is going to be a tough game,” said Briscoe. “We played them earlier in the season and they just pipped us in the last few minutes so we can look to put the score straight.

“A Cup run can definitely help your league form, we are looking to do well in both competitions this year.

“Obviously Easter was a tough period, for every club, but after two wins over the weekend we want to go flying into the Saints game.”

With an especially strong defensive record so far this year and very experienced players in the squad, Briscoe, who lost out at Wembley with Hull FC in 2013, believes Leeds can go one better than the five finals they have reached in the past ten years

“We have been doing a lot of work in defence,” said Briscoe. “Leeds teams in the past have always been good at attacking but in pre-season we worked hard on our defence and we are really happy to have conceded so few points so far.

“Players like Jamie Peacock have been there, and done that. All of the experience that the seniors guys in the side can bring is massive – they can lead from the front and they know what’s coming.

“It would be massive to win the Cup the after losing the way we did last year with Hull. I lost in 2008 as well so that drove me on in last year’s final, but to get back there and win it this year would be massive.”
