Hull FC moved level with rivals Hull KR in the last play-off spot as Danny Tickle kept his nerve with a last-gasp touchline conversion to secure a draw away to the London Broncos at the Stoop.
First-half tries from Tommy Lee and Kieran Dixon gave the Broncos a 10-6 half-time lead and when Matt Cook went over just before the hour, the game looked over as a contest.
Ben Galea had gone over in the first half for Hull FC and, with 20 minutes remaining, Joe Westerman scored their second to spark a Hull recovery.
Still Broncos looked like they would hold out, but in the final minute Richard Horne went over in the corner, and Tickle did the rest with a stunning kick to level things with less than a minute remaining.
The home side had started quicker and it was hooker Lee who made the game’s first break. Yet he could not find support on his shoulder and the ball ended up going into Hull hands.
The Broncos were making yards easier than the visitors and surged forward nearly 90 metres on their set of six in the build-up to the first try.
The pressure of sustained attacks on the Hull line eventually told as Lee shrugged off Westerman and rode a couple of other Hull tacklers to touch down under the posts after 23 minutes; Michael Witt’s conversion made it 6-0.
Ten minutes later, Hull pegged the home side back as Galea regathered a grubber kick which bounced off a Broncos defender to score his third try of the season. Tickle’s conversion levelled the scores.
The highlight of the half then arrived as Dixon picked up the ball on the left wing and danced his way past two Hull defenders to score his seventh try of the season. Witt missed the conversion but the home side led 10-6 at half-time.
Three successive penalties for the Broncos then followed as they made their way upfield and gave Witt a chance to have a shot at goal. He made no mistake to take the score to 12-6 after 51 minutes.
The Broncos’ third try arrived with 22 minutes left to play. Prop Cook took a flat ball from Lee, broke the first line of Hull’s defence and then got past Tom Briscoe to extend his team’s lead.
Westerman responded, spinning off a defender to touch down and bring Hull back into the game with 15 minutes left – Tickle’s conversion making it 18-12.
Hull sensed a comeback and the Broncos soaked up a lot of pressure over the next 10 minutes. But they could not take advantage of a scrum near the line, and the home side took possession again in the last five minutes.
However, with time running out, the visitors worked the ball wide for Horne and he went over left-hand corner before Tickle’s heroics.
