Paul Deacon grabbed two tries as Wigan Warriors moved back to the top of Engage Super League with a comfortable 38-6 win at Harlequins RL.

Deacon bagged his brace after the interval as Wigan emerged triumphant following a sluggish start in the capital.

Both sides had been forced into changes - Sean O'Loughlin and George Carmont missing out for the visitors, while 18-year-old Dan Sarginson made his home debut for Quins at stand-off.

The Warriors thought they had an early lead when Brett Finch wriggled over the line, only for referee Robert Hicks to penalise him for a double movement.

Wigan, having played their rearranged game with Castleford Tigers on Wednesday night, looked off the pace in the opening 10 minutes as the hosts enjoyed the majority of possession.

The Londoners were next to think they had scored when Tony Clubb cantered over the line, only for Hicks once again to chalk the try off for crossing.

The contest was proving a far more even affair than most had expected, with the first score not coming until the 16th minute.

It was the away side that grabbed the lead, Pat Richards soaring to claim a Thomas Leuluai kick and charge over the line.

With the deadlock broken, Wigan decided to up the gears and minutes later they added another try, Ryan Hoffman bursting over after a break from Sam Tomkins.

Having huffed and puffed, on 25 minutes Quins finally got it right, Luke Dorn sucking in the Warriors defence giving room for Karl Pryce to muscle in at the corner.

The men from the capital then came desperately close to drawing level, Luke Gale spilling the ball as he tumbled over the line.

Harlequins skipper Rob Purdham was the next to have a try disallowed despite seemingly grounding as the hosts pressed.

Having seen their own line just about hold firm, the Warriors showed how it should be done when Tomkins jinked inside and out to set up Harrison Hansen for a score before the interval.

Moments after the restart the visitors all but killed the game as a contest when another clever kick led to a try, Finch's chip being gathered by Deacon to touch down.

It was one-way traffic now, Deacon grabbing his second try shortly afterwards when he strode through a gap.

Another try looked on the cards on 55 minutes when Tomkins sped through a hole, only for the full-back to greedily go on his own and slip instead of offloading to the runners either side of him.

With such an appalling home record over recent seasons, the Londoners were never going to get back into it, but with Wigan easing their foot off the gas the hosts did at least enjoy some possession and territory.

They were unable to make anything of it though, and once more Michael Maguire's men were to give a lesson in finishing on 68 minutes, Stefan Marsh wriggling over despite a host of would-be tacklers.

There was still time for a further score, Finch touching down.
