Round 10 Round Up

Round 10 of a competitive Betfred Super League concludes with six teams sitting on 14 points at the top of the table, as we take a look at an action-packed weekend…

Wigan Warriors returned to winning ways with a 30-8 win over Catalans Dragons on Thursday.

This Grand Final rematch saw the current Champions defeat the Dragons following a superb second half performance.

But firstly, a close contest unfolded in the opening forty, with just two points separating the two sides. Julian Bousquet opened the scores for the visitors as he went over from close range, before Luke Thompson crashed over for his first try in the Cherry and White.

The second half would then see Wigan go on to dominate at the DW Stadium, with a blitz of tries from Harry Smith, Adam Keighran, Liam Farrell, and Abbas Miski.

As the Warriors ensured an emphatic Round 10 victory, the Dragons were consigned to another disappointing loss.

Josh Thewlis’ hat-trick for Warrington Wolves would help subject Hull FC to their ninth defeat of the 2024 Super League season on Friday night, as the Wolves emerged 24-6 winners.

It was a much improved performance from the Black and Whites, but they were unable to capitalise on numerous chances.

There was a consolation try for Tom Briscoe on his return however – the winger’s last appearance for the club over a decade ago.

Salford Red Devils would survive a late fightback from Huddersfield Giants to claim a 18-16 win on the road.

Ian Watson’s men had started the game strong, before the Red Devils went on to dominate 18-0 until the 70th minute.

Nene Macdonald was the star of the show for Salford, with his two tries, try assist, and a sensational 253 metres in just 19 carries contributing to their victory.

Macdonald would open the scores on the back of a fantastic interception and raced away 80m in full stride. Just minutes later he was involved in the build-up to the Red Devils’ second try – breaking through the Giants line with another rampaging run, as he found Ethan Ryan in support who touched down.

Salford started the second half on the front foot, as Macdonald snuck in from close range for his second on the 47th minute.

The game looked to be wrapped up as 70 minute mark approached, but the Giants eventually capitalised on an opportunity with Adam Swift capping off a slick move down the left edge. Swift has now impressively scored tries in each of Huddersfield’s last ten matches, as he continues as Super League’s current top try-scorer in 2024.

The comeback continued as Huddersfield applied intense pressure, taking full advantage of the complacency Salford had let slip in. Tui Lolohea jumped on the end of a kick through the line to score before Jake Bibby touched down acrobatically in the corner with two minutes left on the clock.

Two points separated the sides as Jake Connor couldn’t quite convert their second try, with the Red Devils holding on to seal their third win in a row.

The third game of Friday night saw Leeds Rhinos outclass London Broncos at AMT Headingley, as they registered their first home win since early March.

It was a comfortable 42-6 victory for the Rhinos as eight different try-scorers dotted down on the night, including the returning Ash Handley, young Jack Sinfield, as well as Mickael Goudemand who got the first try of his Leeds career.

London had their moments but couldn’t quite muster a score but did go over for a consolation through Robbie Storey.

Saturday's Super League saw two thrilling matches, and it was an exciting afternoon at Sewell Group Craven Park when Hull KR hosted St Helens.

The Robins continued their phenomenal home form, as another stellar performance ensured a 40-20 victory.

A truly pulsating first forty saw a total of six tries scored, as the action went from one end of the field to another. The Robins produced a remarkable attacking display from the off – their first try made by a Mikey Lewis chip kick, as Tyrone May touched down under the posts.

A "you score, we score" affair would go on to unfold, as Saints hit straight back through their Super Jack Welsby, as he skipped his way past numerous defenders to go over.

The Robins’ next tries would come from two brilliant breaks – first it was Sauaso Sue breaking the line before offloading to Minchella who raced away. He in turn found Mikey Lewis who slid over for their second try.

Another Kelepi Tanignoa break paved way for their next score, with the second rowers’ blistering run setting up for Jack Broadbent to cross on his debut.

St Helens wouldn’t be stopped so easily however, with two quick fire tries from Waqa Blake and Konrad Hurrell from close range – the half-time score a tight one at 16-14.

The hosts came back out for the break oozing with confidence, as they dominated with early tries from Peta Hiku and Jez Litten.

Hurrell did come up with a second try on the 65th minute, but it was too little too late for Paul Wellen’s men, as Hull KR showed they mean business in this year’s campaign.

The last ten minutes would see Dean Hadley score the match-winner under the posts to seal victory, before Ryan Hall dotted down in the dying moments and became within one try of equalling the all-time Super League try scoring record.

Over at the Leigh Sports Village it was a confident start for Castleford Tigers, who went 10-0 up against Leigh Leopards.

Tries from Louis Senior and Tex Hoy gave the Tigers the momentum, as Senior intercepted Matt Moylan’s pass to race the length of the field and score his third try in three games.

It was back-to-back tries for Castleford as their newest recruit Hoy skipped and scrambled his way over, with the Tigers shifting the ball from one side to the other.

Craig Lingard’s men looked to be firmly in control but a combined effort from Lachlan Lam and Matt Moylan ensured the Leopards would hit back.

A revived Leigh went then on to score through Edwin Ipape and Josh Charnley before the break as the momentum switched before half-time.

An entertaining second half would follow as Adrian Lam’s men came out raring to go once again - this time with two further tries from Ricky Leutele and Lachlan Lam – Lam’s try looking to be a certain match-winner.

But Castleford refused to cave in, as tries from Sam Wood and both Innes and Louis Senior would bring the Tigers just two points within the Leopards with minutes remaining.

Rowan Milnes then calmly converted a tricky kick from the touch-line to level the scores as the game headed for a nervy golden-point.

There were numerous attempts at a one-pointer, which neither side could execute, as extra time ended in a well-deserved 28-28 draw.
