BWSL : Round 10 Preview

It’s Round 10 of the Betfred Women’s Super League and Wigan Warriors remain at the top of the competition tree with just five rounds to go….

The Warriors, who saw four girls make their England debut last weekend against Wales, face Leigh Leopards away as they look to continue their unbeaten run on Sunday (K.O. 1.00pm).

Wigan asserted their dominance during the last Battle of the Borough in front of a record crowd at Robin Park Arena. An explosive kick-off saw the Warriors cross twice within six minutes. Isabel Rowe kicked 8 conversions to take her season points to 100 whilst continued pressure on the Leigh defence saw Grace Banks score a hat-trick.

Despite efforts after the break with Katie Howard scoring a try and Charlotte Melvin converting for Leigh, continued pressure from the Warriors saw them walk away with a 60-6 victory.

St Helens, who also remain unbeaten, welcome Huddersfield Giants (K.O. 11.30am) - the Giants are looking for their first ever win against the Red V.

Their previous match saw Huddersfield struggle to get a foot in against the dominant Saints who are fighting for the top spot in the league.

Elsewhere, York Valkyrie meet Warrington Wolves at the LNER Community Stadium (K.O. 12.00pm). Their previous meeting saw York dominate with five tries in the first half giving them a 30-0 lead. A further seven tries, followed by six conversions in the second half, saw the reigning Super League champions storm to a 70-0 victory.

The final game of the week will see Barrow Raiders host Leeds Rhinos (K.O. 12.00pm). Leeds enjoyed a strong 66-4 win over Barrow the last time these two sides met. After a tough start for the Rhinos, with them failing to take in the kick-off, Barrow got first use of the ball and Vanessa Temple scored. However, the Rhinos were able to counter almost instantly as Lucy Murray found a short ball to Ebony Stead, who scored under the posts.

That was followed by Sophie Nuttall’s first try of the afternoon, giving the Rhinos a 12-4 lead after just 10 minutes. Four tries from Ebony Stead and a hat-trick from Sophie Nuttall later and the Rhinos took the win.
