Rivals Round Predictions

Catalans Dragons v Toulouse Olympique

History awaits. The first all French derby in Betfred Super League kicks off Rival Round and represents another landmark moment for French Rugby League. All eyes will be on this monumental clash and it promises to be a full-blooded, fiery affair.

The Dragons will be seething after being knocked out the Challenge Cup over the weekend, whilst Toulouse have had an extra week’s preparation heading into Round 8. Catalans will rightly be favourites and sit just two points off top spot but like all derby matches, form can easily go out the window.

Expect a fast opening driven by emotion and passion. Catalans will look to go set for set whilst Toulouse will hope to disrupt the Dragons and take them off their stride.

Prediction: Dragons by 10

Wakefield Trinity v Castleford Tigers

It’s been a long time between drinks… Trinity haven’t beaten their West Yorkshire rivals since February 2015. If history is anything to go by, the Tigers will be favourites heading into this one.

Both sides exited the Challenge Cup over the weekend and will be desperate to bounce back on Thursday Night. Trinity are sitting pretty above their neighbours after three league wins on the bounce, with the Tigers struggling to find consistency so far this season.

Although Wakefield will fancy breaking their drought, fortune may favour Cas.

Prediction: Tigers by 4

Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos

The Giants and Rhinos are having vastly contrasting years. Huddersfield sit in third place – two points from top spot – whilst Leeds are in eleventh place with just two points.

And the Rhinos need a spark. Huddersfield will still be on a high after reaching the Challenge Cup Semi-Finals, presenting Leeds a chance to gate crash the party and get their season back on track.

There’s been a marginal difference between these two sides over the past two seasons and it could be a similar story on Thursday.

Prediction: Rhinos by 2

Warrington Wolves v Salford Red Devils

There isn’t much to separate the Wolves and Red Devils this year – both sides sit on six points, have scored the same number of points whilst Salford have conceded just six more points than Warrington.

The Wolves are in a rut. They’ve lost their last four games and need a win before their season is derailed further. The Red Devils have struggled to find any consistency after a bright start to the year, so this match should be an interesting prospect.

Despite Warrington’s indifferent form, they may just turn a corner in Rivals Round.

Prediction: Wolves by 10

Hull KR v Hull FC

If the last meeting between the two sides is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat. There’s little between these two sides in Super League this year and it should be a back-and-forth contest on Friday.

The Robins will be raring to go after reaching the Challenge Cup Semi-Finals last weekend – something their inner-city neighbours failed to do. The Black & Whites edge in front on the league table but form rarely counts for much when the teams from East & West Hull meet.

It’s a hard one to call but home advantage may sway it the way of Hull KR.

Prediction: Robins by 1

St Helens v Wigan Warriors

The final match of Rivals Round and arguably the best. Rivalry aside, this is first vs second and the two best teams in 2022 going head-to-head.

Given recent meetings and their impeccable form, Saints go into this one 1/4 favourites with Betfred. They’ll be playing in front of a sold-out crowd and will be expected to get past their bitter rivals. But it won’t be easy. Wigan are fierce in defence and have genuine game breakers in Jai Field and Bevan French. The Warriors can pounce from anywhere at any time.

This has all the potential to be a St Helens vs Wigan classic!

Prediction: Saints by 4
