Man of Steel update

After four months of pulsating Betfred Super League action, the weekly Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel voting will no longer be published following the conclusion of Round 15.

The final 12 rounds will maintain an element of mystery around the coveted award before the eventual winner is announced in September.

And with plenty of games to be played before that, expect more twists and turns as the race to become the 2022 Man of Steel heats up.

Jai Field is in the ascendancy half-way through the season thanks to his blistering performances for the Warriors. Field has so far been awarded an impressive 19 Man of Steel points, including six three pointers during his 13 Super League appearances. It marks an incredible comeback for Field who missed the majority of the 2021 season after an injury-riddled campaign.

Hot on Field’s heels is Tui Lolohea. The Tongan international is having a season to remember at the Giants and has been integral to their resurgence in his first year at the club. Lolohea’s move to full-back has proved to be a stroke of genius from head coach Ian Watson and has seen the talented playmaker elevate his game to a new level.

Full backs feature prominently at the top of the Man of Steel standings with Jack Welsby quietly working his way up the leaderboard. The 2021 Young Player of the Year has shown maturity beyond his years after cementing the full-back position for St Helens this season and sits joint third after 14 rounds.

Early season favourite Mitchell Pearce is gradually growing in influence and sits level on points with Welsby. After a quiet start to life in the South of France, Pearce is beginning to find his feet and has become a prominent figure in the Catalans team. He will be hoping to replicate the form of his teammate Sam Tomkins, the current holder of the Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel award.
