Magic Weekend Day Two Round Up

Leigh Leopards secured their fifth straight Betfred Super League win after defeating Wakefield Trinity 30-4 on Day Two of the 2023 Magic Weekend at Newcastle's St James' Park.

Lachlan Lam's double combined with further scores from Robbie Mulhern, Edwin Ipape and Josh Charnley ensured Adrian Lam's side moved up to fourth in the league table.

The Leopards were reduced to 12 men in the opening period when Ben Reynolds was dismissed following an altercation with Trinity's David Fifita, but this only seemed to galvanise Leigh and spark a magnificent all-round team display.

Wakefield did get themselves on the board through Max Jowitt nine minutes from time, but Leigh hung on to record a comfortable victory.

Hull FC produced one of the biggest stories of the weekend after recording an impressive 30-18 triumph over second-placed Warrington Wolves.

Josh Griffin stole the show after claiming a deserved hat-trick, whilst Danny Houghton, Adam Swift and Tex Hoy also crossed for the Airlie Birds.

Warrington raced into a 12-0 lead thanks to tries from Connor Wrench and George Williams, but Hull responded in emphatic fashion with four unanswered tries through Houghton, Swift and the first two of Griffin's treble.

Midway through the second half, Wrench touched down for his second of the afternoon to give the Wolves hope, but Griffin's third along with Hoy's first-ever try for the club put the result beyond doubt.

St Helens moved up to sixth in the table after cruising to a 48-6 win over Huddersfield Giants.

Huddersfield made a blistering start when Kevin Naiqama crossed over with just six minutes on the clock, however, tries from Konrad Hurrell, Mark Percival and Tommy Makinson, plus the boot of the latter gave Saints a 16-6 half-time lead.

The World Champions picked up where they left off after the break as Makinson crossed for a further three to secure an incredible quadruple, Hurrell notched his second, and both Joey Lussick and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook completed the scoring for Paul Wellens' troops.

The attendance for Day Two of Magic Weekend at St James' Park was 26,326, with the event's overall attendance totalling 63,269.
