Round 19 Round Up

Round 19 of the Betfred Super League saw significant changes in the league standings, with new League Leaders, three teams joint-top, and the Play-Off race well and truly reignited...

The action kickstarted with a West Yorkshire derby on Thursday, with Leeds Rhinos registering their first win under new head coach Brad Arthur.

Ash Handley opened the scores for the Rhinos side as they travelled to the John Smith's Stadium to face Huddersfield Giants - the winger reaching the highest for Matt Frawley's kick, and juggling with the ball before he dotted down.

But the Giants would hit back inside the first ten minutes, as Aidan McGowan also capitalised on a kick and pounced down in the corner - getting over for his first try in the Claret and Gold.

Tries were then disallowed for both sides, and two quickfire scores from the Rhinos before half-time would give the visitors a 6-18 lead. Harry Newman was on the end of another perfectly-timed Frawley kick, before Rhyse Martin and Lachlan Miller combined to send Frawley over the whitewash.

Three more Rhinos tries would follow in the second half, with Handley completing his double with a trademark flying finish.

Leeds would punish again through Brodie Croft dancing his way to the line, and Miller side-stepping multiple Huddersfield defenders to slide over, keeping the Rhinos' Play-Off hopes alive (6-34).

On Friday, there was a hotly anticipated colossal clash between the then top two, with Warrington Wolves coming away as winners, and the new League Leaders in Round 19.

It was a spectacular performance from Sam Burgess' Wolves, in arguably one of the biggest games of the Betfred Super League season so far, as the away side ran in seven tries on the night.

Arron Lindop, Adam Holroyd and Matty Ashton and his intercept all went over in the opening half, and Wigan Warriors responding, in what was their only try, through Liam Marshall.

Lindop and Ashton both bagged braces after the break, and Josh Thewlis made it six tries with another intercept and length of the field effort.

Then, Rodrick Tai, who recently committed a new deal with the Wolves, went over on the hooter to round off an emphatic and unforgettable victory, with the Warriors enduring back-to-back defeats for the first time since June 2023 and slipping down to third in the table (4-40).

Leigh Leopards entertained St Helens - producing arguably what was their best performance this season so far. It was electric in the Leigh Sports Village in Round 19, as Adrian Lam's men stunned a sorry Saints outfit and consigned them to a fifth straight defeat.

Four tries in the first forty put the Leopards ahead – Umyla Hanley, Tom Amone and Darnell McIntosh all crossed, before a try of the season contender was finished off by Kai O’Donnell.

The hosts’ exciting expansive play continued well into the second half, as well as their tremendous defensive display.

St Helens’ only try came from Ben Davies – he was there to support young Harry Robertson, who capitalised on a Leigh error and raced away down the left edge.

Running riot once again, there was another four tries to come from the Leopards, including a Josh Charnley brace, as well as playmakers Lachlan Lam and Matt Moylan adding themselves to scoresheet.

Deservedly taking the two league points, with a 46-4 score-line, Leigh Leopards have proved their Play-Offs chances are far from over just yet...

The third game on Friday saw a Mikey Lewis hat-trick help Hull KR come out on top against London Broncos (40-16). 40+ points were also scored in East Hull, as the Robins moved up to second place and joint-top with Warrington and Wigan.

This sets up nicely for an interesting meeting in Round 20 when Hull KR travel to face Warrington next Friday, in what will be another top of the table clash.

The Broncos did manage to reduce the deficit to just six points by scoring a try on either side of half-time and make a contest of it, but Willie Peters' men proved too strong in the end, and went on to complete a treble over their opponents in 2024.

Saturday got underway with the in-form Castleford Tigers travelling to face a Salford Red Devils side, who needed to get back to winning ways.

The Tigers opened the scoring through Jason Qareqare, however, it was the Red Devils who led 12-6 at half-time thanks to tries from Nene MacDonald and Ryan Brierley.

Castleford came out strong in the second half, with a second from Qareqrae before Elie El-Zakhem put the Tigers into the lead. But the Red Devils got a lifeline, when Ethan Ryan raced away following an interception. Marc Sneyd then converted to give the hosts a 18-16 lead.

A yellow card for Sylvester Namo, saw the Red Devils punish, as Oliver Partington crashed over from close range and then Chris Hankinson finished off a move from deep. Luis Johnson scored a consolation try, however -  but it was not enough as the Red Devils held on to the 30-22 success.

The final game of the round saw a exciting contest. On his return, Sam Tomkins threatened Hull early which saw his move completed by Micky McIlorum for the opening try. McIlorum left the field shortly after with a calf injury.

Tariq Sims was shown a red card from Liam Rush after just eight minutes. Sims caught Ed Chamberlain high and then attempted to move the player. Hull FC took advantage of the extra man, as Carlos Tuimavave went over for the visitors.

The game saw a second red card before the end of the opening quarter. FC's Ligi Sao caught Tomkins with a high shot and his red saw both sides complete the remainder of the game with 12 players each.

Arthur Mourgue kicked a penalty later in the half, before Tomkins jinked through the FC defence.

After half-time, Denive Balmforth slipped through the Dragons' defence he in turn tried to find Jack Walker, Tomkins parried the ball backwards and Walker picked up the loose ball to touch down underneath the sticks to reduce the gap to 14-12.

Catalans responded well, with captain Benjamin Garcia and Tom Davies both touching down which looked to complete the victory for the hosts.

Lewis Martin rose the highest to give Hull FC a chance, but a missed conversion ruled out any slim hopes with FC trailing by eight with three and a half minutes remaining. The Dragons held on to win 24-16.
