BWSL: Round 14 Preview

The final round of the regular season is upon us in the Betfred Women’s Super League!

Sunday (14 September) sees Wigan Warriors, St Helens, York Valkyrie and Leeds Rhinos begin their preparations for the upcoming Play-Off Semi-Finals.

League leaders Wigan Warriors will face fourth place Leeds Rhinos, whilst runners up St Helens meet York Valkyrie, who are two points behind them in third position (dates and KO TBC).

Last Friday, Wigan Warriors won their first League Leaders’ Shield after beating St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

And earlier this week, Wigan confirmed that the presentation of the League Leaders’ Shield will take place at half-time during Friday’s Men’s Betfred Super League Round 26 match between the Warriors and Castleford Tigers (12 September).

Their win over Saints means that Wigan have won every trophy available to them so far this season. They enter the semis on the hunt for their second Grand Final win, having only made one appearance back in 2018.

The final round of the regular season begins then kicks off on Sunday with a variety of match-ups to look forward to.

York Valkyrie will travel to AMT Headingley to face Leeds Rhinos (KO 3pm) – broadcast live on The Sportsman.

Leeds are looking for their first home win against the Valkyrie since 2021, where they walked away with an emphatic 68-16 victory.

In their most recent game, a back-and-forth battle emerged between the two, with York edging ahead to take the win after they took advantage of a Leeds error.

Which side will build momentum as they gear up towards the Semi-Finals?

Also hoping to close out their season with another win are Barrow Raiders who face Huddersfield Giants at Laund Hill (KO 12pm).

The Raiders have faced some tough defeats this season, including their last match against the Giants in Round 6.

The Giants took an early lead before Barrow hit back and made room for Leah Clough to score under the sticks, making a conversion for Nicole Stewart simple.

But not before long, the visitors regathered as Mollie Iceton powered through and Amelia Brown scored her brace.

Conversions from Sam Hulme and Becky Grady took Huddersfield into the break with a strong lead at 6-20.

The second half saw the Raiders once again attempt to fight back as Stewart went over for a converted try, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap between the two and a second try from Iceton sealed the victory for the Giants.

Sunday’s final game sees Leigh Leopards host St Helens at Leigh Sports Village (KO 1pm).

In their last meeting, Leigh suffered a heavy defeat as the Red V exploited any weaknesses in their opponents' defence.

And in what was the first time the two had met, Saints collected a series of accolades, including a Dani McGifford hat-trick, braces for Luci McColm, Rachel Woosey and Phoebe Hook, and ten goals from the aforementioned McColm.

The game between Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves will no longer take place after the Wolves' decision to withdraw from the competition.

This results in the Warriors being awarded a 48-0 win.
