Double recognition for Lams in May Awards

Lachlan Lam of Leigh Leopards has been voted Glen's Vodka Player of the Month for May by Super League fans voting on the Our League app - completing a significant double for his club and his family.

Lam, the 25-year-old Papua New Guinea playmaker who joined Leigh in their promotion campaign last year after four seasons in the NRL with Sydney Roosters, pulled the strings masterfully as the Leopards surged into the upper reaches of the Super League table with consecutive wins against Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants, Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves - all of them convincing, with an aggregate margin of 110-34.

And that form has received additional recognition with Lam's father, Adrian, named Super League's Betfred Coach of the Month for May - the second time he has won the award, the first having come in May 2021 when he was in charge of Wigan Warriors.

Father and son were each presented with their awards on the St James' Park pitch after the Leopards continued their winning run by beating Wakefield Trinity 30-4 in Betfred Super League's Magic Weekend in Newcastle.

Derek Beaumont, Leigh's ebullient owner who has recruited Lam senior and junior for the club in the last two years, said:

"I'm delighted for both of them - they are both gaining rewards for the dedication and commitment they show in different ways.

"I think Lammy will be as pleased to see Lachie recognised as player of the month as much as he is to win the coach award himself.

"He's a young lad who joined a new group last year but he's been brilliant for us, and he's been hitting new heights these last few weeks.

"I think the key to it, for him and his dad, is that they're both enjoying themselves. You can see Lachie is having fun on the pitch, and I think one of his dad's great qualities as a coach is being able to instill all the right qualities of hard work and commitment in such a fun manner.

"There's a great mood about the club at the moment, and winning these two awards is another part of that."

Lachlan Lam follows Hull KR's Mikey Lewis, George Williams of Warrington Wolves and Hull FC's Tex Hoy as the fourth winner of the Glen's Vodka Player of the Month award for the 2023 season.

He polled the highest in an especially strong field which included three more half-backs - Salford's Marc Sneyd, Hull FC's Jake Clifford and his Leigh team-mate Ben Reynolds - as well as the young Catalans Dragons full-back Arthur Mourgue, and the St Helens prop Alex Walmsley.

Adrian Lam's Betfred Coach of the Month award has been determined by a panel of experts, and follows wins for Wigan's Matt Peet in April, and for Warrington's Daryl Powell in February and March.
