Play-Off Semi-Finals round-up
9 Oct 2023
Catalans Dragons dethroned the reigning Champions, St Helens, in dramatic fashion to secure their spot at Old Trafford on Saturday. After an incredibly tight and tense battle between the two sides, a last gasp Sam Tomkins try clinched the victory for Catalans - a fitting way for Tomkins to finish his final game at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.
After a sketchy start from both sides, an Adam Keighran penalty finally broke the deadlock after 28 minutes. It remained 2-0 up until the break before a Will Hopoate try gave Saints a 2-6 lead 10 minutes into the second stanza.
The Dragons reduced the deficit to just two thanks to another Adam Keighran penalty, before Matty Lees was shown a yellow card with nine minutes remaining, with Adam Keighran once again converting the resulting penalty to level the scores.
With the game in the balance and less than two minutes on the clock, Sam Tomkins was in position to attempt a match-winning drop goal. He was quickly closed down by the onrushing Saints defence, but expertly evaded their pressure and weaved his way towards the try line to send the Dragons to the Theatre of Dreams.
The second Semi-Final proved more one sided as Wigan Warriors romped home to victory against Hull KR at the DW Stadium. It didn't take long for the Warriors to take the lead - they raced away to an 18 point lead within the opening 10 minutes thanks to a Liam Marshall double and Jai Field try.
Elliot Minchella responded for the Robins to give his side a glimmer of hope, but that quickly faded early in the second half. Liam Marshall completed his hat-trick after the break with Toby King also crossing to extend Wigan's lead to 30-6 with half an hour of the contest remaining. Further tries from Field and Abbas Miski reaffirmed the Warriors' dominance.
