The Final Charge has begun, and after a series of dominant performances from the top half of the competition tree last weekend, Wigan Warriors and St Helens remain undefeated with just four rounds remaining.
Our first game of the week is St Helens versus Barrow Raiders on Saturday (23 August) at the Totally Wicked Stadium (K.O. 2pm). Barrow are looking for their first win against the Red V after a series of unfortunate defeats.
The two met earlier this season in round four, where a chain of errors cost the Saints early on. Three separate errors enabled Barrow to build momentum and score with a short pass to Nicole Stewart, who went on to convert.
Despite a difficult first half, with two missed conversions from Saints, the Red V managed to gain a narrow lead going into the second half at 6-8. In the second half Saints returned with a strong attacking set to build momentum against the Barrow defence and take the final score to 6-40.
On Sunday York Valkyrie meet Wigan Warriors at the LNER Community Stadium (K.O. 12pm).
The two previously met in the season’s opening round where Wigan scored seven tries in an impressive victory against the reigning champions.
A striking offensive effort from the Warriors saw them lead 28-0 at the break. The Warriors then extended their lead five minutes later before Grace Banks, the competition’s current leading try scorer, scored her second try of the day to take the final score to 40-6.
Elsewhere, Leigh Leopards play Leeds Rhinos at Leigh Sports Village (K.O. 1pm). In their previous match at AMT Headingley the Leopards would lose out, despite taking a fourth-minute lead with a try from Toryn Blackwood.
Leigh struggled to maintain control and the Rhinos shortly began their campaign for victory. Three unanswered tries saw Leeds lead 20-4 at the break, followed by a further two in quick succession after the restart. The newly-promoted Leopards showed some resilience to score two successive tries, bringing the score back to 30-12, but Leeds continued to dominate and a total of ten tries for the Rhinos saw them eventually take a 48-12 win.
The final game of the week will see Huddersfield Giants host Warrington Wolves at Laund Hill (K.O. 2pm).
Their last meeting proved to be a close match-up for the two sides, with Huddersfield clinching the win at 30-40.
The turning point for the match was a yellow card for Warrington Winger Kerrie-Rose Evans which gave the Giants an opportunity to close the gap.
With Wire down to twelve the Giants took advantage, and ran in two tries. Despite determination from the Wolves, continuous errors saw Huddersfield take control, with a second-half hat-trick from Amelia Brown securing their victory.
