Round 21 Round-Up

Round 21 of the Betfred Super League continued to deliver as the race for the Play-Off places hotted up.

Wigan Warriors were 8-20 victors in the Battle of the Borough against Leigh Leopards on Friday evening.

An Innes Senior try and two Adam Cook goals had given the Leopards an 8-0 lead however they were caught napping before the break as Jai Field scored a wonderful 90m effort.

The second half saw the Warriors capitalise on two more Leopards mistakes with Zach Eckersley and Bevan French taking advantage before Noah Hodkinson would round out the scoring later in the half.

The upset of the round came on Saturday afternoon as York Knights held off a late St Helens fightback to earn a famous 34-32 win at the LNER Community Stadium.

In an end-to-end affair both sides scored six tries apiece with Oliver Field of the Knights and St Helens fullback Jack Welsby both crossing for braces.

Field’s second effort and resulting conversion gave the Knights a 12-point lead heading into the final eight minutes and despite efforts from Harry Robertson and Jacob Douglas it was Mark Applegarth’s men who hung on for their seventh win of the season.

Leeds Rhinos remain two points clear at the top of the Betfred Super League following a massive 46-0 win over Toulouse Olympique.

Seven different try-scorers went over for the Rhinos - Riley Lumb, Brodie Croft, Harry Newman, James McDonnell, Tom Holroyd and Mikolaj Oledzki - with reigning Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel Jake Connor scoring twice.

Wakefield Trinity continue to apply pressure to the Rhinos however from 2nd spot following a seventh consecutive league victory. A 12-32 win over Catalans Dragons means Daryl Powell’s side are still just two points behind the league leaders.

Doubles from Cam Scott and Isaiah Vagana alongside efforts from Jake Trueman and Caleb Hamlin-Uele were enough to overcome the Dragons. Matthieu Laguerre and Toby Sexton scored the Catalans tries.

Warrington Wolves and Hull KR bolstered their play-off ambitions with victories over Castleford Tigers and Bradford Bulls, respectively.

Despite only taking a six-point lead into the break, the Wolves came away comprehensive 18-48 winners at Castleford on Saturday afternoon.

Matty Ashton’s fine run of try-scoring form continued with another brace whilst Toby King crossed for his 100th career try.

The Robins jumped above the Leopards in the Betfred Super League standings with their 40-16 defeat of the Bulls.

In similar fashion to the Wolves, Hull KR took a six-point lead into half-time before running away with the game after the interval.Round 21 kicked off on Thursday evening with Huddersfield Giants earning just their fourth win of the season, 22-16, against Hull FC.

A late George Flanagan try proved the difference. A Davy Litten double either side of half-time had given the Black and Whites a lead but Lewis Jagger would level the scores before Flanagan’s winner.
