Wigan Warriors 16-10 Warrington Wolves

Wigan Warriors opened their 2020 Betfred Super League campaign with a 16-10 win over Warrington Wolves at the DW Stadium.

Warrington looked bright in the early stages and took the lead after eight minutes thanks to a Stefan Ratchford penalty.

The Wire kept up the early pressure and with 15 minutes gone, Ben Murdoch-Masila bulldozed his way through the Wigan line to get the first try of 2020 Betfred Super League and earn Warrington an 8-0 lead.

Wigan hit back moments later when Bevan French darted over and Zak Hardaker converted, reducing the Warrington lead to two after 20 minutes.

The Warriors took the lead after 25 minutes when they were awarded a Penalty Try after Chris Hill’s high tackle on Sam Powell. Hill was sent off for the challenge and Hardaker converted to give Wigan a 12-8 lead.

Ratchford again converted a penalty to bring the score to Wigan 12-10 Warrington at the half.

Both sides came out fighting in the second half, but neither could capitalise until the 65th minute when Bevan French set up Liam Marshall to go over in the corner and extend the lead to 6 points.

The teams continued to trade blows and Danny Walker came close for Warrington but was held up just short.

Zak Hardaker then looked to have secured the points with minutes remaining, but was denied by the Video Ref.

Warrington kept the pressure up as the game came to a close, but couldn’t break through the Wigan defence and the Warriors held on to pick up the first 2 points of 2020.
