Ellis to deliver trophy at Grand Final

Gareth Ellis will walk out with the Super League Trophy at the Betfred Super League Grand Final on Friday at the KCOM Stadium

Ellis, 39, announced his retirement from the game today (Monday), bringing to an end a stunning career which started in 1999 and has included more than 450 first team appearances, in Super League and in the NRL.

The former Great Britain and England international will take up a role as an assistant coach at Hull FC next season.

Ellis made a huge impact in Super League, winning the Grand Final twice with Leeds Rhinos, before heading to Australia in 2009 to play in the NRL for Wests Tigers.

At Wests he was named as the club’s player of the year for three years in a row.

On walking out with the Super League Trophy, Ellis said: “I’m a bit nervous about it to be honest - but it’s such an honour to be asked.

“As I reflect on my own career, the Super League wins with Leeds Rhinos in 2007 and 2008 gave me memories I will never forget.

“Two great sides are contesting the 2020 Grand Final on Friday and both have a chance to make their own memories.

“I’ve been in the game long enough to have built good friendships with players on each team and I have a huge respect for the traditions of both clubs.

“I wish them the best of luck.

“The values of these clubs are epitomised by two players who, like me, are calling time on their careers at the end of the season.

“I have played with and against James Graham and Sean O’Loughlin many times and have an enormous amount of respect for them.

“They are tough competitors, great guys and both men are champions.

“Neither will give each other an inch on Friday - and they wouldn’t want it any other way.??
