Wolves go green for Magic Weekend

Warrington Wolves have officially unveiled their 2022 limited-edition Magic Weekend kit which in a Rugby League first is made from recyclable materials.

The eco-friendly kit is a blend of forest green with horizontal dark green stripes and is produced with materials yarned from 70% recycled plastic with technology designed in partnership with our official kit providers O’Neills.

Each shirt produced equates to 17-27 recycled plastic bottles depending on size, and is at the maximum threshold of 70% recyclable material in order to allow shirt printing on the design.

The production process sees bottles washed and chopped into small chunks where they are then melted to form resin. The resin is then used to form yarn and produce the jerseys.

Should the kit design be a big success amongst fans and players it will be the blueprint for all future shirts going forwards.
Furthermore, a tree will be planted in the UK for every shirt purchased.

The limited-edition kit will be worn by the Wire on Sunday 10 July at Magic Weekend when we face Catalans Dragons at St James’ Park, Newcastle.

Supporters can pre-order their jerseys now priced at £52 for adults and £38 for juniors.

The Wolves have extended a huge thank you to their club kit partners for their cooperation and support in the kit design process.

Warrington Wolves prop Robbie Mulhern, who studies Environmental Studies at the Open University, said: “This is a really exciting project to be a part of.

“It’s such a big issue facing our world so to use this project to educate people is really important and something I’m passionate about.

“Hopefully this can take off and be the case for all kits across Rugby League and other sports going forward.

“The big thing is trying to reuse and not remake materials at the minute. If this is a success then in the future it will save so many resources which will help our planet.

“It starts at home with people making positive changes. It’s about the way we consume whether that’s fashion, diet or technology. Everyone has to scale back a bit and these are great initiatives by the club to do that.??

Neil Williams, UK Sales Manager of O’Neills, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with Warrington Wolves on this pioneering and innovative project.

“Our ability to match Wire’s request for a sustainable jersey, is something that our research and development team have been working on for quite some time. To see one of our foremost professional teams being able to offer the supporters a jersey that is composed of recycled plastic bottles is something that gives us great satisfaction.??

Warrington Wolves CEO Karl Fitzpatrick added: “I’d like to thank our kit partners O’Neills for collaborating with us on this exciting project for what can hopefully be the blueprint for all of our shirts going forward.

“The unique kit is a world-first for our sport and is part of a bigger campaign to become a more environmentally-friendly business and reduce our impact on the environment.

“As a club we have a duty to our town to promote a more sustainable way of living and further activations are planned for the rest of the year and beyond.??
