Peters ready to rally the Robins

Hull KR have a new man at the helm in 2023. Willie Peters is set to tackle his first head coaching role as he takes charge of the Robins ahead of the new Betfred Super League campaign.

Although he is at the beginning of his head coaching journey, Peters has a wealth of experience as an assistant under the guidance of some of the most well-renowned leaders in the sport.

From his tenure as an assistant coach at South Sydney Rabbitohs under the mercurial Wayne Bennett, to assisting other highly regarded coaches such as Anthony Seibold, Adam O?Brien and current New South Wales State of Origin head coach Brad Fittler, Peters has built an enviable CV.

Now, he's hoping to lean on those experiences as he looks to implement his own ideas and philosophies into a Hull KR club that will be expecting to push for the Play-Offs in 2023.

"I've worked with a lot of quality coaches so for me, it was about picking their brain along the way," Peters told hullkr.co.uk.

"But now it's about putting what I've learnt along the way into what I believe in."

Peters has inherited a Hull KR squad more than capable of competing in Super League. The Robins faced their fair share of adversity in 2022 but their effort never faltered.

And thanks to his early appointment whilst Danny McGuire took interim charge during the back end of 2022, Peters has had time to bolster his playing squad ahead of his arrival at Sewell Group Craven Park.

"It's been six months in the making for us to get over here, so we've been able to build a squad that we believe is going to be extremely competitive. It?s exciting times ahead."

Despite the challenges presented last season, the Robins finished on a high thanks to a gutsy derby win away at Hull FC. That eye-catching display has set the benchmark for the new season and ensured that the Robins went into pre-season with some momentum behind them.

"We want to hit the ground running," Peters emphasised.

"We finished the year off against Hull FC on a positive note. We want to take that into pre-season - I'm a big believer that pre-season defines who you are in the season. So, we need to come back ready to go and hit the ground running.

"There was a lot of adversity and a lot of challenges for the team and Danny at the time. But what I loved about this team is they never gave up once. We're going to pride ourselves on effort - world class effort every week and we compete to win in everything we do.

"That means at training we're competing all the time, in games there'll be no excuse for not competing with this football team. And I know what the fans want - I've spoken to a lot of fans in the last couple of weeks - they just want a football team they can be proud of, that doesn't give up and competes to the end. I know if we do that, we'll be in a good place."

The Robins will play the majority of their home games on Friday Night's in 2023, and Peters is determined to make Craven Park a fortress, with the help of their passionate and loyal fan base.

"I'm really looking forward to Friday Night's, packing the stadium out and making it a hostile environment to come to. I've only seen it through the vision on TV but they're vocal fans, they're passionate fans and my job is to ensure we've got a rugby league team they can be proud of and that's what we're aiming to do."
