Warriors win League Leaders' Shield
19 Sep 2024
Wigan Warriors won their fifth Betfred Super League League Leaders' Shield with victory over the Salford Red Devils in Round 27.
History was made on Thursday evening, as the Warriors regained the Shield for a second consecutive year - a club first. Alongside rivals St Helens, Wigan became only the second team in Super League to achieve this back-to-back feat.
A formidable Warriors outfit ran in 11 tries to seal the Shield in emphatic fashion, as they beat the Red Devils in front of 16,000 crowd at The Brick Community Stadium.
Constantly in control of the game, Jake Wardle and Zach Eckersley both grabbed one try each, as Kruise Leeming, Bevan French and Super League’s current top try scorer Liam Marshall each scored twice.
The Red Devils failed to score a single point as the in form Jai Field completed a hat-trick - the hosts dominating with their stunning attack and determined defence - and ultimately proving why they are the current Champions.
But that could all be set to change as the highly anticipated Play-Offs commence next weekend. There’s one trophy left up for grabs and a trip to the Betfred Super League Grand Final at stake.
As the regular season comes to a close and the league standings yet to be determined, Matt Peets' will eagerly watch on to wait and see who they will face in their semi-final home tie on Saturday 5 October (K.O. 5:30pm).
