BWSL: Round 3 Preview

It's Round 3 of the Betfred Women's Super League!

The third round of the Betfred Women’s Super League (BWSL) gets underway on Saturday with Leeds Rhinos versus Wigan Warriors part of a double header of action for the Rhinos MND Awareness game at AMT Headingley (KO 2pm).

The Warriors will be aiming to extend their unbeaten start to the 2025 season and since knocking the Rhinos out of the Betfred Challenge Cup to reach a first Wembley Final, they’ve started the Super League campaign with two wins from two – including a 106-6 win over Barrow Raiders last time out.

Leeds have won their last six Headingley meetings with Wigan, last tasting home defeat against the Warriors in August 2018 (23-22). Lois Forsell’s side will be looking to avenge their semi-final defeat to the Warriors by securing a first win of the new league campaign.

There’ll be a 2024 Grand Final rematch on Sunday when York Valkyrie host St Helens at the LNER Community Stadium (KO 12pm). York have won their last four home meetings against Saints with the Red V’ last away win against York a 56-0 victory in September 2019.

The fixture will be the second time the two sides have faced one another this season after St Helens reached their fifth consecutive Women's Challenge Cup final with victory in a tight, error-strewn semi-final win against their hosts.

A try from Shona Hoyle and the trusty kicking of Faye Gaskin saw them home at the Totally Wicked Stadium. The reigning BWSL champions hit back through Rhiannon Marshall, but Saints kept them at arm's length.

Leigh Leopards are enjoying a dream start to their inaugural BWSL campaign and currently sit joint first in the Super League table alongside Wigan with two wins from two. They travel to Laund Hill to face Huddersfield Giants this weekend (KO 2pm).

They’ve faced one another on two previous occasions during the Challenge Cup with the hosts victorious on both occasions – including their last meeting in 2024.

Brilliance from Amelia Brown and Ana Da Silva proved the different that day. Brown opened the scoring in the 12th minute before adding another two stunning efforts before the break. She completed her five try haul in the second half with Da Silva bagging a brace.

Warrington Wolves and Barrow Raiders will both be looking to win their first points of the season when they meet on Sunday (KO 1pm). Both sides won their home games when they faced one another in last year’s Super League campaign, which could be a good omen for Ged Ginty’s side this weekend...
