Round 22 Round Up

Round 22 got underway at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, where Warrington Wolves pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Catalans Dragons and maintain slim hopes of a place in Play-Offs.

Matthieu Laguerre’s try as well as Tommy Makinson’s hat-trick gave the French side a comfortable lead after 30 minutes with some attractive rugby league on show, although Zack Gardner and Jake Thewlis soon replied for the hosts before half-time.

It was then a tale of two halves as the Wolves went on to dominate the second stanza with further tries from Sam Stone and Thewlis, before brother Josh Thewlis sealed the victory with a breakaway score (30-22).

The Battle of the Brick did not disappoint on Friday night, as Hull KR edged ever closer to their first League Leaders’ Shield.

They travelled the face the champions Wigan Warriors in a truly thrilling contest between the top two, but it was Willie Peters’ men who came out as the winners.

Dean Hadley’s try and two penalty kicks from Rhyse Martin gave the visitors a 10-0 advantage in Friday’s unbelievably intense affair, with both teams especially feeling the pressure in the later stages of the second half.

Adam Keighran’s late try did set up a nail-biting finish, but it was too little too late, and the Robins find themselves with a six-point lead at the top with just five games of the regular season remaining (6-10).

Over at The OneBore Stadium on Saturday, Leeds Rhinos thrashed their West Yorkshire rivals Castleford Tigers with a dominant 11-try display.

Brad Arthur’s men continued to build momentum towards the Play-Offs with a flawless performance in Round 22, including doubles from Brodie Croft, Ryan Hall and Ash Handley.

Harry Newman, Lachlan Miller, Presley Cassell and James Bentley were also on the scoresheet, as was Jake Connor who produced another magical masterclass and kicked nine goals.

Only young Jenson Windley could find a response for an embarrassed Tigers outfit with a consolation try late on (6-64).

Hull FC continued their Play-Off charge with a statement victory over Leigh Leopards on Saturday afternoon.

The Black & Whites sit in sixth spot after Round 22 and built up a 12-0 lead through Cade Cust and Harvey Barron.

However, individual efforts from playmakers Lachlan Lam and Gareth O’Brien helped bring the Leopards right back into it. But in what was an enthralling encounter at the MKM Stadium, Lewis Martin’s match-winner proved to be the difference (18-12).

A classy showing from St Helens brought down the curtain on Round 22 as they demolished Huddersfield Giants 52-4 and moved up to third place in the table.

Just like the other winning teams this weekend, Saints upped their game as we head into the business end of the year, and Tristan Sailor stole the show with two stunning tries and an assist, while Mark Percival and Kyle Feldt also grabbed doubles.

Owen Dagnall finished off a 100m Red V effort and Jonny Lomax and Morgan Knowles also contributed points in what was a sensational team performance.

The final Super League fixture, Salford Red Devils v Wakefield Trinity, was cancelled. Details can be found here.
