Round 13 started with an unexpected Shield decider after Warrington Wolves announced they will be withdrawing from this year’s competition, resulting in Wigan being awarded a 48-0 victory for next weekend’s final round fixture against them.
Prior to Friday’s game, the Warriors fell just one point behind the Red V, promising a close match-up between the two – which they delivered.
Saints failed to take advantage of a penalty awarded in the opening minute of the game, leaving the visitors’ Jenna Foubister to score and take the first lead of the match at 6-0.
The host fought back with a strong defensive attack, preventing the Warriors from adding to their total and instead crossing the line twice themselves to make it 10-6.
The end-to-end action continued as Wigan’s Ruby Hunter prohibited Saints from scoring a third try, and Anna Davies scored in the corner, with an unsuccessful conversion bringing the score to 10-10.
Further effort from both sides took the score to 16-14 at half time, giving the Saints a slight lead going into the second half.
The pulsating derby battle continued, and the Warriors came back from the break with a new-found intensity to take their first lead since their early score.
And although Saints fought back to level again, the Warriors’ Molly Jones powered on through to mark their final lead, before the team’s strong defensive held out to see them walk away from the Totally Wicked Stadium with their third trophy of the season.
A remarkable story for Denis Betts' rising Wigan Warriors.

Elsewhere, at the Northern Competitions Stadium, Barrow Raiders hosted York Valkyrie in their penultimate game of the regular season.
Having already confirmed their place in the Semi-Finals, Lindsey Anfield made multiple changes to her team which saw two under 19s players, Ruby Ellis and Olivia Turner, make their debuts.
The Valkyrie got off to a flying start as Agnes Wood scored the first try of the game, crossing again at the half hour mark and giving York a lead at 14-0.
York continued on with Turner scoring on her debut and Izzy Bibby scoring the first of her brace, before Barrow slipped through to score their only try of the game.
York soon hit back and went on to mark a 48-6 win against the Raiders.
The final game from the weekend was Leeds Rhinos at Huddersfield Giants. The Rhinos went into the game with three of their key players making a return from injury – Caitlin Beevers, Lacey Owen and Keara Bennett, ahead of the upcoming Play-Offs.
Despite a poor start from Leeds, giving Huddersfield the opportunity to take the first lead, the visitors made certain it would be their only points of the game with a dominant defence and powerful attack spurring the Rhinos on to leave Laund Hill with a 28-4 win.
Warrington Wolves’ decision to withdraw from the Women's Super League saw their Round 13 opponents, Leigh Leopards, awarded a 48-0 win.
