BWSL: Grand Final Preview

The Betfred Women’s Super League comes to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday (5 October) when regular season League Leaders’ Wigan Warriors take on arch-rivals St Helens at The Brick Community Stadium (KO 5:30pm).

The two won’t just be battling for the trophy, they’ll be reigniting one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries in a season full of pivotal fixtures between the pair.

Saints and Wigan met in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium back in June in what was an emphatic win for the Warriors. Though Denis Betts’ side dominated that final, grasping territory early on and refusing to let go, the Red V have since proven that they don’t plan on making it easy for the treble-chasers to secure victory.

In Round 6, St Helens forced the Warriors to claw back a draw after they held onto the lead at 6-16 going into the second half. A missed drop goal from Wigan saw their chance to win big in front of a record home attendance dwindle and they were forced to settle for a 22-22 draw.

Just a few weeks ago, the pair met in a battle for the League Leaders’ Shield at the Totally Wicked Stadium, having spent the season taking turns at the top of the league.

2025 Woman of Steel nominees Isabel Rowe and Jenna Foubister opened up the scoring as a clever grubber from Rowe bounced into the hands of Foubister to score. A conversion gave them a 6-0 lead but it didn’t last long as the home side went ahead on the twenty-three minute mark when Dani McGifford touched down in the corner.

Going into the second half, Saints held a narrow lead at 16-14, and the end-to-end battle continued - right to the very end. 10 minutes after the restart the Warriors regained control, and although Phoebe Hook brought Saints level again, Molly Jones sealed a narrow victory in the final eight minutes.

This Sunday will be all to play for...will it be St Helens lifting their record sixth Betfred Women’s Super League trophy or will young guns Wigan Warriors top off a record season by completing the treble and winning the biggest prize of all?
