Grand Final 2025 Stats Preview

It’s a Grand Final REMATCH.

In Super League’s 30th season, the 28th Grand Final is almost upon us, and this Saturday Night, Hull KR will face Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford for a second year running.

It’s a colossal clash between the league leaders and the champions, with both sides chasing down the chance to make history.

Hull KR are on the cusp of a historic treble on Saturday night. If they defeat the current champions, Wigan Warriors, in the 2025 Betfred Super League Grand Final, then they will lift the trophy for the first time – and become just the fifth club to do so.

It would be the BIG FOUR, NO MORE!

KR would also add their name to the list of modern-day treble winners, along with Bradford Bulls, St Helens, Leeds Rhinos and the Warriors.

But as they discovered in 2024, overcoming a formidable Wigan side, won’t be an easy task. Matt Peet’s men conquered the whole lot last year, becoming the first team in the Super League era to accomplish the quadruple.

Fast forward to the here and now, and the Warriors have their sights set on achieving a three-peat. They also will not want to let go of another trophy in 2025, having already lost the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield to Saturday's opponents.

Their title is precious, and they are expected to defend it with everything they have.

The only other two teams to win ever three in a row are Leeds Rhinos (2007, 2008 and 2009) and former champions St Helens (2019, 2020 and 2021, before lifting the trophy again in 2022).

This season, Hull KR finished top of the pile for the first time in Super League history, becoming the ninth club to do so.

The League Leaders’ Shield race went down to the wire, however, with the Warriors hunting them down until Round 27, and just two points behind.

Willie Peters’ men eventually got the job done against Warrington Wolves on the second to last day, and now their focus turns towards the big stage, and hopefully completing a clean sweep of trophies.

Second-place Wigan, as everyone knows, are a club steeped rich in history, and victory on Saturday would be the club’s eighth Super League Grand Final triumph since first lifting the trophy at the inaugural Grand Final in 1998.

Their previous Grand Final wins are as follows:

  • 1998 Wigan Warriors 10 Leeds Rhinos 4
  • 2010 Wigan Warriors 22 St Helens 10
  • 2013 Wigan Warriors 30 Warrington Wolves 16
  • 2016 Wigan Warriors 12 Warrington Wolves 6
  • 2018 Wigan Warriors 12 Warrington Wolves 4
  • 2023 Wigan Warriors 10 Catalans Dragons 2
  • 2024 Wigan Warriors 9 Hull KR 2

Wigan have also lost the most Super League Grand Finals in history - although if anything, this shows their capability of reaching the season’s finale.

But if they do go on to suffer defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday, then they will extend their own unwanted record of Grand Final losses to seven (it is six, as it stands).

It’ll be the sides’ second meeting at Old Trafford, with Hull KR featuring in back-to-back finals – the only two times they have been Grand Finalists. The Warriors, on the other hand, will be competing in a record-equalling 14th Grand Final, and are now on par with rivals St Helens.

In this year’s Super League, the teams have met on two occasions – and it’s currently one apiece.

Round 7 showcased a brilliant battle of the best, before deathly duo Bevan French and Jai Field combined for the match-winning score in the closing stages.

Abbas Miski then added the icing on the cake moments later as he batted off multiple defenders to touch down, and Wigan walked away with a 12-28 victory.

An unbelievably intense affair then unfolded at The Brick Community Stadium in Round 22 as the race for the League Leaders’ Shield intensified. This time, it was Hull KR who left with a hard-fought 6-10 win, and a six-point lead at the top of the table with five regular rounds remaining.

Having both triumphed on each other’s home patch in emphatic fashion, what could possibly lie in store at The Theatre of Dreams this Saturday?

We say, prepare to be entertained!

As already mentioned, it’s been an enticing neck and neck between the top two in 2025, and in the last ten meetings, there has been little to separate the two sides - with the Warriors winning six and the Robins winning five.

In total, Wigan have won 30 Super League meetings against Hull KR - including wins in the 2009, 2010 and 2023 Play-Offs and the 2024 Grand Final – whilst Hull KR have won 13.

The Warriors are looking to record a trio of Grand Finals for the first time in the club’s Super League history and have 19 players in their side who have already featured on the big stage – highlighting their experience across the playing group.

This includes their seasoned skipper Liam Farrell, who is set to appear in a tenth Grand Final of his career, having won a famous six finals already.

Jamie Peacock and James Roby share the record for most Grand Final appearances, having each played in the Super League title decider on eleven occasions.

If Farrell is awarded Player of the Match trophy on Saturday night, he would join an elite group of just seven other players to win this accolade twice with the same club in a Grand Final.

Jake Wardle also has the chance to join this group.

While Farrell won the Harry Sunderland Trophy in a 12-6 victory against Warrington in 2016, Wardle picked up the award in 2023’s 10-2 triumph against Catalans Dragons.

And Warriors wizard French could also rank among the existing seven if he becomes a two-time winner on Saturday.

Last year saw French become the first recipient of the renamed Rob Burrow Award, which was presented to him by Rob’s father, Geoff Burrow. Can he go back-to-back?

It wasn't the for the same club, but Luke Thompson picked up Player of the Match in 2019 with his old team St Helens. Does he have a chance to do it again but in Wigan colours?

Hull KR have fourteen players in their side who featured in last year’s Grand Final, and the majority of their squad has remained the same for 2025, bar a few new additions.

With victory, Hull KR’s Tyrone May and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves have the chance to join the ranks of players to have won Grand Finals on both sides of the world.

May was a substitute in the Penrith Panthers side that defeated South Sydney Rabbitohs 14-12 in the 2021 NRL Grand Final.

Waerea-Hargreaves started at prop in Sydney Roosters' NRL Grand Final wins in 2013 (26-18 v Manly Sea Eagles), 2018 (21-6 v Melbourne Storm) and 2019 (14-8 v Canberra Raiders).

14 overseas players have achieved the Grand Final Double to date.

Did you know that the only Englishman to ever complete the double is Adrian Morley, who won the NRL Grand Final with Sydney Roosters in 2002 and the Super League Grand Final with Bradford Bulls back in 2005?

JWH (36-years-old), along with teammate Michael McIlorum (37-years-old) also have the chance to become the oldest player to score in a Super League Grand Final.

The oldest player to score in a Grand Final is James Maloney (35-years-old), who kicked three goals in defeat for Catalans Dragons against St Helens in 2021.

With defeat, Hull KR's Joe Burgess would undesirably join the ranks of players to suffer most Grand Final losses, with five.

Burgess was on the losing side for Saturday's opponents Wigan in 2014 (14-6 v St Helens), 2015 (22-20 v Leeds) & 2020 (8-4 v St Helens) and for the Robins in 2024 (9-2 v Wigan).

Ex-Wiganer Oliver Gildart is also set to feature against his former club. Gildart missed out on the 2024 Grand Final through injury and has won two (2016 and 2018) and lost two (2015 and 2020) during his career.

Fantastic Field needs just one more appearance to reach 100 for the Cherry and Whites. Fancy French is also just one try away from 150 career tries.

He scored a superb solo try - and the only try - in last year's Grand Final, but will we see some more magic on Saturday?

Interestingly, Robins head coach Willie Peters has one Super League Grand Final appearance to his name. Peters started at scrum-half for Saturday's opponents Wigan in a 29-16 defeat to St Helens in 2000!

Finally, last year’s Grand Final attendance was a whopping 68,173 - the best since 2017!

More of the same in 2025? It's going to be electric...
