Betfred Super League revealed as UK’s most high-octane sport with staggering ball-in-play stats

New analysis from Stats Perform has revealed that the Betfred Super League delivers the highest ball-in-play time, confirming that it is the most action-packed major sport in the UK.

The data, from the world lead in sports AI and data modelling, highlights that throughout the opening rounds of the 2026 season, Super League provided 53.8 minutes (58%) of ball-in-play time.

That’s significantly higher than rugby union’s Six Nations [1] (39 minutes and 43%) and means Super League fans enjoy almost 40% more live action per match, underlining Rugby League’s reputation as the quickest and most relentless code.

This new analysis also reaffirms that Rugby League remains the UK’s most intense field sport with the competition set to go up another gear when historic derby foes go head-to-head during the ferocious Rivals Round this weekend (April 3/4/5).

With more action per minute than other major sports – Premier League football [2] is around 55 minutes (55%) but over a longer game time and the NFL [3] is 11 minutes - fans can expect to see more continuous passages of play and visibly quicker games throughout Round 7 where warring rivals raise the vigour and tension even further.

The positive ball-in-play time has been aided by several rule changes implemented ahead of this Super League season intended to improve the speed of the game. Those have seen the average play-the-ball quicken from 3.26 seconds last term to 3.01 this time around.

Rhodri Jones, RL Commercial Managing Director, said: “These new stats prove what our passionate fan base already knows - Super League is the most high-octane league in the UK and the most exciting.

“The speed and intensity of the sport is reflected in the numbers, with more ball-in-play time meaning more action for fans to enjoy.

“Off the back of a brilliant start to the season — with attendances their highest at this stage since Super League began 30 years ago, new teams entering the competition, a landmark trip to Las Vegas and the celebration of our 30th birthday - the momentum behind Super League is clear.

“Now attention turns to one of the biggest moments in the calendar: Rivals Round, where the stakes are higher, the atmospheres are louder and the intensity goes to another level.”

Rivals Round kicks-off when reigning champions Hull KR face Hull FC at a sold-out Sewell Group Craven Park this Friday (KO 12.30pm) before St Helens host old foes Wigan Warriors (KO 3pm) with the action rounded off with a return of the Bradford Bulls versus Leeds Rhinos derby at Bartercard Odsal Stadium (KO 8pm).

Easter Saturday sees another triple-bill of action with Huddersfield Giants entertaining York Knights (KO 3pm), Warrington Wolves hosting Leigh Leopards (KO 3pm) and Catalans Dragons taking on Toulouse Olympique in Perpignan (6pm).

All games are live on Sky Sports or SuperLeague+ and a full list of fixtures and ticket links for Rivals Round here.
