Round 8 Preview

The Betfred Super League returns for Round 8!

St Helens, Hull KR, Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors all booked their places in the 2026 Betfred Challenge Cup semi-finals last weekend.

But for now, focus shifts back to league action as the Super League race continues to intensify, with five teams sitting joint-top in the table, and just four points separating sixth and fourteenth…

Thursday 16 April

Hull FC v St Helens (20.00) – live on Sky Sports

Round 8 gets underway in West Hull as Hull FC host St Helens.

The Black & Whites will be hoping to bounce back from their defeat to the Robins in Rivals Round, whilst the Saints, who will carry momentum from their Challenge Cup semi-final win, are aiming to make it five wins out of six.

Yusuf Aydin and Brad Fash return to the Hull side, with Fash set to make his 200th club appearance. If he does, he'll become only the tenth player in the modern era to reach this milestone for Hull FC.

Young duo Will Kirby and Lloyd Kemp also come into the squad, alongside loanee Harry Newman, who has joined the club on a one-week loan move from Leeds Rhinos.

The five incoming players replace Jake Arthur (calf), Joe Batchelor (back), John Asiata (hamstring), Arthur Romano (ankle), and Ryan Westerman.

Meanwhile, Paul Rowley makes three changes to his Saints squad.

Sadly, it has been confirmed that Jake Wingfield has suffered an ACL injury, meaning he will play no further part in the 2026 season. Lewis Murphy also picked up an injury in the Challenge Cup, and young Academy talent Oscar Knox also steps out.

It is a welcome sight for the Red V as captain Matty Lees returns to the 21-man squad selection. Young Saints Alfie Sinclair and Billy Keeley are also included in the team travelling to Hull.

Friday 17 April

Toulouse Olympique v Hull KR (18.00) – live on Sky Sports+ and SuperLeague+

Toulouse are back on home soil for Round 8 but have a tough task on their hands as they welcome the champions.

They last met in 2022 on three occasions, with Toulouse coming away with a win 28-6 win on French soil. The Robins did triumph 22-16 in later fixture, however.

The third fixture that year saw a tight score-line of 24-28 in Hull KR’s favour.

Toulouse are seeking their first win since Round 2 on Friday, whereas Willie Peters’ side have finally hit the ground running and are on for three Super League wins in a row.

The visitors will also be confident after their dominant win in the semi-finals last Saturday, as they continue their mission to retain their trophies.

Robins captain, Elliot Minchella returns to the squad after a minor hamstring injury, with Tom Whitehead dropping out.

Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos (20.00) – live on Sky Sports

A West Yorkshire Derby headlines Friday Night’s action, as Huddersfield look to make it third league wins on the spin.

The Giants will welcome Leeds Rhinos to the Accu Stadium and are searching for their first home win over the Rhinos since 2023.

Victory for Huddersfield will push them further away from the foot of the table, whereas Leeds are hunting down top spot.

Harry Rushton and Sam Halsall return to Huddersfield's 21-man squad after overcoming their injuries that have kept them side-lined for a number of weeks.

Connor Wrench misses out with a slight strain, but should return for the upcoming fixtures, with Matty English, Liam Sutcliffe, Joe Greenwood and George Flanagan still absent.

For the visitors, there is just one change as prop Tom Nicholson-Watton completes the squad this week, with Harry Newman heading on a one-week loan to Hull FC.

York Knights v Leigh Leopards (20.00) – live on Sky Sports+ and SuperLeague+

There’s a tie between two teams near the bottom of the Super League table, where a win would put a bit of daylight between the other.

The Leopards have dominated previous meetings against the Knights, but it’s set to be a feisty reunion at the LNER Community Stadium, as the former Betfred Championship sides meet for the first time since an early round Challenge Cup match in 2023.

Who will produce a much-needed response in Round 8?

There are five changes to the York squad. David Nofoaluma is available again after being cup tied last week, while Kieran Hudson and Jon Bennison are named after recovering from injuries. Cody Hunter is included on loan from Newcastle Thunder, along with Ben Littlewood on loan from Leeds Rhinos.Jack Smith, Joe Law, Danny Richardson and Nikau Williams all drop out.

Saturday 18 April

Wakefield Trinity v Bradford Bulls (15.00) – live on Sky Sports+ and SuperLeague+

Wakefield and Bradford will renew a fierce rivalry on Saturday afternoon.

They last met in the 2024 Championship competition, although their last Super League-related encounter came in the 2015 Super 8s, in an unforgettable Million Pound Game.

Trinity, in infamous fashion, avoided relegation by the skin of the teeth as they went on to beat the Bulls 24-16 with a last gasp try in a game of dramatic twists and turns.

Fans should expect fireworks in their Round 8 fixture, with Trinity chasing top spot and Bradford keeping tabs on a Play-Off place.

Wakefield will be without one of their key man Jazz Tevaga who copped a two-match ban in last Sunday’s semi-final outing.

Catalans Dragons v Warrington Wolves (18.00, UK time) – live on Sky Sports+ and SuperLeague+

It’s been a close contest in recent seasons when Warrington and Catalans have gone head-to-head.

Last year, the Wolves completed a clean sweep of victories over the Dragons but were pushed all the way by their French opponents (30-22, 20-24 and 18-12).

Sam Burgess’ side are sitting pretty at the top of the tree with a cup semi-final spot secured, but have Leeds, Wigan, Wakefield and Saints breathing down their necks where the league is concerned.

Did you know that Sam Powell needs one appearance to reach 350 for his career. It could be a special night for him if selected.

Interestingly, maverick Marc Sneyd needs just one drop goal to reach a total of 50 in his career. With how these two sides’ encounters have gone recently, could one be on the cards in Round 8?

The Dragons are without Joel Tomkins in Round 8, with the club recently announcing the head coach's departure.

Sunday 19 April

Wigan Warriors v Castleford Tigers (15.00) – live on Sky Sports+ and SuperLeague+

Round 8 will conclude with a clash between the Warriors and the Tigers.

Wigan will be boosted over their bruising semi-final victory in the Challenge Cup and will now set their sights on asserting their dominance in Super League.

Castleford have had chance to dust themselves down after disappointing Rivals Round loss to Wakefield, but will we see a reaction from Ryan Carr’s men?

Wigan have won their last 14 meetings with Castleford, as well as their last 11 home meetings.

The Tigers' last victory at The Brick Community Stadium came in 2017.

Zach Eckersley has scored tries in the hosts’ last three meetings with Castleford – will he be one to watch in Sunday’s action?

Wigan will be without general Harry Smith following his three-match ban from the quarter-finals, as well as Sam Walters who will spend the next three weeks on the side-lines.
