BWCHSL: Round 3 Round-Up

The Betfred Wheelchair Super League season continued last weekend with Bradford Bulls opening the round as they faced London Roosters at Sedbergh Centre.

A youthful Bulls side faced a tough test as the Roosters exploded out of the blocks, crossing five times in the opening 11 minutes and setting the tone for what would be a dominant performance.

Bradford showed spirit despite the early onslaught as their first points came when Kieron Johnson converted a penalty to boost the home side’s morale.

The second half followed a similar, relentless pattern as London’s attacking unit continued to rack up a huge lead.

Johnson produced a stunning full-field try in the 60th minute, showing their determination for success in their first season in the competition, but the Roosters' power was impossible to overcome as they finished the game at 12-114.

Leeds Rhinos hosted Wigan Warriors in a repeat of the previous weekend’s Betfred Challenge Cup Semi-Final which saw the Rhinos seize their place in the competition’s final.

It was another tough test for both sides as the home team took an early lead with tries on both edges.

Quick to bounce back, the Warriors put on a set play which saw Jack Heggie release Nathan Roberts in the right corner.

A down court kick from Adam Rigby saw Toby Burton-Carter collect and evade a last ditch tackle from Leeds’ Nathan Collins, taking the score to 12-10.

A back and forth game ensued as the sides went into the second half at 30-20. Despite the narrow gap, the Rhinos came out firing after the break, taking over territory that the Warriors could not recover.

Burton-Carter once again had the last word in the half, crashing over as Heggie converted, but it was too late as the final score of 60-26 left the Warriors frustrated for a second consecutive week.

Sheffield Eagles opened up Sunday’s games as they took on Hull FC at home. In what was arguably the closest game of the weekend, FC took a narrow lead at 20-22 as the sides headed into the second half.

Both teams continued to battle hard for the last 40, with scores remaining tight until the 60th minute. It wasn't until Luis Domingos went over for the first of four tries in the last 20 which saw the Eagles take the edge and win the game at 44-34.

Closing out the third round were Halifax Panthers who took a trip across the Northern border to face Edinburgh Giants.

Despite the scoreline at 20-88, the Giants had plenty to be proud of after putting on a spirited display, which included a hat-trick for their Player of the Match, Calum Davidson.
