BWSL: Round 2 Round-up
2 hrs
Defending champions Wigan Warriors ran in 14 tries to keep their winning streak alive in Round 2 of the Betfred Women’s Super League.
Anna Davies crossed four times whilst Eva Hunter secured her hat-trick as the Warriors dominated Barrow Raiders and made it six wins from six in all competitions this season.
Following closely behind are St Helens who sit second in the table on points difference. The Saints have had an equally dominant start to the season, also remaining unbeaten in both the BWSL and Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup after overcoming York Valkyrie on Saturday (23 May).
It was a slow start for the Valkyrie as Leah Burke set St Helens up near to the York line as Liv Turner’s tackle stopped her from going over for the opening try of the game.
Amy Hardcastle quickly made her way over with Faye Gaskin adding the conversion to open the game.
A set for set battle began but Gaskin’s strong kicking game meant the visitors had the edge throughout.
Despite a shift in momentum which saw York take advantage of back-to-back sets on the Saints’ line, the Red V proved to be the stronger side, finishing the game with a narrow 14-18 victory at LNER Community Stadium.
Leeds Rhinos took on Featherstone Rovers in their first home game of the season, racking up a huge 11 tries against the visitors.
Instrumental in those 11 was Connie Boyd, who made it over for four herself whilst also being sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle.
Also making it over was Ebony Stead who secured a brace against the Raiders making it eight tries total for the season.
The final game of the weekend saw Leigh Leopards host Huddersfield Giants as both teams fought to break the 20-20 tied result that resulted from their last game.
The Giants came out fighting, running in six tries to win 0-26 against the Leopards for their first league win of the season.
It was a special day for Amelia Brown who recorded her 100th try for Huddersfield after she went over alongside Mollie Iceton to give them an 0-8 lead going into the break.
Their scoring continued into the second half when Sam Hulme, Faye Barraclough, Becky Grady and Gracie Hobbs all made it over heading home with a confident victory.
