Round 15 Round Up

Leeds Rhinos strengthened their grip on top spot in Round 15 with an emphatic showing against Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday Night.

The Rhinos now find themselves two points clear at the top of the table following an impressive 6-34 result, with Maika Sivo scoring his fifth hat-trick of the Betfred Super League season.

Brodie Croft, Harry Newman and Chris Hankinson also added scores as Brad Arthur’s side dominated this highly anticipated top two clash, with Lachie Miller shining on his return to action.

On Friday Night, Hull KR kept up their formidable home record with a hard-fought win over Play-Off potentials Leigh Leopards.

Joe Burgess and Peta Hiku gave the Robins an early advantage, but Jacob Alick-Wiencke’s try made it 10-4 at the break.

Further tries from Jai Whitbread and Bill Leyland were enough to ensure victory for the home side though, despite Bailey Hodgson’s late consolation for Leigh (22-8).

Across the city, Hull FC were unable to match their rivals’ success as they faced Wakefield Trinity.

Daryl Powell’s men proved too strong for the Black & Whites in Round 15, as Trinity cruised to a 10-36 win.

Two Tom Johnstone tries put Wakefield firmly in control, before Seth Nikotemo and Mike McMeeken touched down to give the away side a comfortable 24-0 lead at the break.

Hull did show some fighting spirit in the second half, with Tom Briscoe beating Josh Rourke to the line to score, before he assisted Davy Litten’s breakaway try.

But Jazz Tevaga’s effort and Nikotemo’s second would well and truly wrap up the game.

Wigan Warriors produced another perfect performance on Saturday as they demolished York Knights on the road.

The Warriors were once again a thoroughly entertaining watch in the sunshine this weekend, scoring a staggering 13 tries in total to move into fourth place.

Both Jai Field and Noah Hodkinson completed stunning hat-tricks, showcasing Wigan at their attacking best, whilst Sam Eseh, Jake Wardle (x2), Adam Keighran, Junior Nsemba, Bevan French and Jack Farrimond also got in on the scoring act.

The Knights did improve in the closing stages and scored four unanswered tries (20-72).

Saturday’s Super League in the scorching sun continued as Catalans Dragons took on Bradford Bulls in the south of France.

This was a third win in four matches for John Cartwright’s side, as they kept their top six hopes alive with a 34-24 victory.

The home side always led, although Bradford chased their opponents all the way, before 'Forbes Ferrari' Charlie Staines did what he is renowned for, and raced away for the match-winning score.

Zac Lipowicz, Josh Allen, Julian Bousquet, Solomona Faataape and Kruise Leeming were try scorers for the Dragons, whilst Ryan Sutton, Ethan Ryan, Connor Wynne (x2) and Caleb Aetkins were the names on the Bulls' scoresheet.

Bradford still searching for their first away win of the campaign.

There were glimpses of a Classy Cas on Saturday Night, as Castleford Tigers defeated Toulouse Olympique on home territory (36-18).

The Tigers led 24-0 at break thanks to tries from Tom Weaver, Pheonix Laulu-Togaga'e, Jason Qareqare and Zac Cini.

And Cas didn't stop there as Daejarn Asi dotted down and Qareqare, who has scored tries in his last five matches, got his second try of the evening.

Benjamin Laguerre, Maxime Stefani and Cesar Rouge did add scores for the visitors in the final 15 minutes, but it was the Tigers who claimed the two competition points.

Finally, St Helens strengthed their place in the Play-Off race with a win over Super League strugglers, Huddersfield Giants (38-6).

It was a scrappy opening forty, with perhaps the warm conditions playing their part, but two Curis Sironen tries and a third from the returning Nene Macdonald put Saints 16-0 up at half-time.

Cole Geyer responded for the Giants after the break but Alex Walmsley's try delivered the killer blow.

Harry Robertson's try and Jake Davies' brace then saw off Saints end the game comfortably, putting them level on points with Hull KR, Wigan and Wakefield ahead of Round 16...
