Trinity are 2026 Betfred Super League champions

Wakefield Trinity are the new Betfred Super League champions.

They overcame Warrington Wolves 23-10 to make history in a thrilling Grand Final at a sold-out Old Trafford.

Playing in their first-ever Super League Grand Final, Wakefield took the glory courtesy of tries from Cameron Scott, Isaiah Vagana, Jazz Tevaga and Tom Johnstone.

It is the first time the West Yorkshire club have been crowned league champions since 1968 and the days of rugby league legend Neil Fox CBE.

Trinity boss Daryl Powell, who lost with Castleford Tigers in his only previous Grand Final appearance as a coach in 2017, has overseen a remarkable turnaround for his side.

They were playing in the Championship as recently as two years ago but have rapidly risen with the backing of new owner Matt Ellis and surged to success despite finishing fourth in the regular season.

England star Johnstone won the Rob Burrow Award as player of the match following a fine display on the left flank for Trinity in front of 71,728 spectators, the Grand Final's biggest attendance since 2015.

Wakefield, who were 40/1 to win the competition at the start of the season, led 19-0 at half-time, Jack Sinfield having slotted a drop goal just before the break in front of his dad Sir Kevin Sinfield.

Ahead of kick-off, the bumper crowd rose to its feet to welcome Sir Kev into the stadium, the ex-Leeds Rhinos and England skipper delivering the match ball having just completed the last leg of his remarkable 7-in-7: The Grand Finale challenge.

Sinfield, who led Rhinos to seven Grand Final wins at Old Trafford during his glittering career, completed seven ultra-marathons in seven days in his continued bid to raise awareness and funds for the Motor Neurone Disease community.

Running once more in memory of his friend and team-mate Rob Burrow, who died from MND in 2024 aged 41, he has raised more than one million again in this week alone.

Trinity, led superbly by captain Mike McMeeken, went down to 12 men when Corey Hall was sin-binned for a high tackle on Arron Lindop in the 43rd minute.

Four minutes later, Lindop scored to give Wolves hope, Ewan Irwin improving.

But that was the only scored they conceded when down to 12 men and Trinity replied with Johnstone's try just before the hour mark.

Lindop got a second try but it wasn't enough and Warrington's long 71-year wait for a league triumph goes on after they succumbed to a fifth Grand Final defeat.

The sell-out crowd ensured Super League continued its record-breaking season, breaking the two million spectator mark for the first time in its history.
