Warrington Wolves 12-30 St Helens

St Helens followed up winning the League Leaders’ Shield with a 30-12 win away at second placed Warrington Wolves.

The Wolves got off to the perfect start when Jake Mamo went over in the corner inside three minutes, but Kevin Naiqama responded for the visitors, scoring under the posts just after the 10 minute mark.

Warrington regained the lead after 24 minutes when Josh Thewlis touched down in the corner for his first Super League try in just his second appearance.

Jonny Lomax responded for Saints minutes later when he confused the Wolves line with a dummy. Stefan Ratchford’s penalty on the stroke of half time for the Wire meant St Helens went in to the break with a slender 12-10 lead.

Saints turned up the heat in the second half, scoring just four minutes into the second half when Kyle Amor’s quick feet allowed him to slip through the Wolves defenders and set up Joseph Paulo.

Ratchford scored Warrington’s only points of the second half with a penalty in the 57th minute to make the score Warrington 12-18 St Helens.

Matt Costello regained a two-score lead for the visitors when he forced his way over after quick hands from the back line.

Tommy Makinson then confirmed the win for Saints with a spectacular diving finish in the corner and Danny Richardson brought up 30 with a difficult touchline conversion.

The win increases Saints’ lead at the top to 14 points.

Warrington remain in second with 30 points, with Hull FC just behind on 28 points and a game in hand. Hull FC travel to Wakefield on Sunday, but Warrington’s superior points difference means the Wire will remain in second after round 25.
