Saints to lift the League Leaders' Shield

St Helens will lift the League Leaders' Shield tonight at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Betfred Super League would like to congratulate St Helens who will be awarded with the League Leaders’ Shield after their home game against Castleford Tigers tonight.

It’s the eighth time Saints have lifted the trophy  – the most in competition history – and they have done it in some style, backing up their 2018 triumph by an even wider margin.

Victory over Wakefield Trinity at the start of this month saw Saints clinch the title after moving 12 points clear, a gap they have since extended with away wins over closest rivals Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos.

CEO Robert Elstone said: "Saints have dominated the season so far.

"Playing to exceptionally high standards week-in, week-out, they are deserved winners of the League Leaders’ Shield.

"The rugby they have played under head coach Justin Holbrook has thrilled and entertained, and represents the best Super League has to offer.

"Credit must also go to chairman Eamonn McManus and his team who have assembled such an impressive squad and support team over the past few seasons.

"The club continues to produce so many outstanding young local players who are all contributing so much to Super League.

“Of course, there is so much still to be played for this season, and Saints will know more than most that the biggest tests still await as they enter the play-offs."

That may yet come at the Grand Final on October 12, a match they lost last year as favourites to Wigan Warriors.

Their 16-point lead at the top of an otherwise fiercely-contested Betfred Super League competition undoubtedly points to the impressive level of dominance they have had over their rivals thus far.

But there is no question that for Saints the season’s success rests on winning a first Grand Final since 2014.

With just three rounds of the regular season to go, there is still so much at stake for clubs hunting a top-five finish as well as those in the race to avoid relegation.

Warrington Wolves, Salford Red Devils, Wigan Warriors and Hull FC are all level on 30 points, with Tigers just outside them on 28. Only 12 points separate 11 teams, from joint second to bottom club London Broncos.

Elstone added: “There is everything to play for and so much to look forward to.

"The new play-off format will see more twists and turns, and drama, building every week to the ultimate prize, the Grand Final, at Old Trafford."
